Domain Names
15. The Treasury Solicitor is unable to sell domain names. Since October 2004 domain name registration contracts have ended immediately if the company which registered the domain name is dissolved. We are therefore no longer able to sell domain names registered with Nominet UK. Further guidance can be obtained at
Nominet UK. Nor can we sell domain names ending in ".com", as the title to a domain name depends upon the place where the appropriate register is kept. The registry for ".com" domain names is operated by VeriSign Inc, whose head office is in the USA. The domain name is situated, therefore, in the USA, even if it is registered in the name of a dissolved UK company. We can only sell assets which are situated in England and Wales.
I am trying to secure a domain name that is owned by a business that has been dissolved - do i therefore just contact nominet with evidence that the company has been dissolved? Would they then allow me to purchase it or would it 'drop' forc everyone to have a go at catching?
Perhaps someone should set up a script that searches for domains that are registered to limited companies and enquires whether they are dissolved? PM me if I have hit on a genius idea??!!
