I've always wondered about that one too.
FWIW shopping.co.uk was once stolen by someone. I won't explain exactly how. However I and another couple of others knew it had happened. We figured out who'd done it (he wasn't smart enough to cover all of his tracks). We reported it to Nominet and they said it couldn't possibly happen. Obviously we were bitter because we'd missed out on it potentially dropping.

It stayed with the thief for a while and then suddenly went to suspended status (someone else reported the incident, we think). After a while it was transferred to the current registrant who purchased it from the legitimate former registrant (the current registrant
is legitimate.

). I chatted to Nominet management later on about it and sensed the embaressment.
The secure way to manage your names is to get your own tag and retag all of the domain names that you are responsible for to it. That way nobody else can push your names elsewhere. If someone does manage to fake a transfer via Nominet, paying £15 or whatever the charge is, you'll get an email warning you about the pending tag change before it actually occurs.
