I had an email in December, plus again on Friday, from someone offering to put an affiliate site on a domain I have. In return, he'd take a share of the earnings. Has anyone heard of this type of set up? I must admit I'm tempted as the money would be really handy, but I'd rather he purchased straight from the off, it's his market from what he's stated. He's based in the US.
Has anyone any experience of doing this, and if so, what advise would you give? Thanks!

Sounds fine in theory but just requires a lot of trust and for example if he ends up selling text links or something then it should always go in the revenue pot.

Having a site on the domain would presumably increase the value of the domain so you should also agree a % for him if you sell the domain or the site down the line ?

I don't have experience of this, but I'm sure this type of deal gets done. I would say make sure you retain full control of the domain name, just point the nameservers to his site, and make sure you get a detailed contract drawn up that covers all details of the undertaking.

Been there few times. Didn't like the idea... It's like giving someone control over your "virtual property". Probably would do this type of setup only with a family member or a close friend, sorry.

I actually really like this idea, I am looking into contracts and ways of sharing access at the moment in similar projects.

Obviously its better if you are doing it with a trusted friend but there are ways of doing it with people you have never met you just have to be sensible.

Just thought i would come back to you all about this. I decided that, on reflection, it wasn't a good idea for me personally. Yes i can see the benefits as others have stated, but the reality was the guy in question was reluctant to agree anything in writing, and the exchange of emails left me with the impression i was trying to get blood out of a stone for that. Some people like to do business on a word, some like it on paper, that's just the way it is i suppose. It didn't help matters much when there was a constant barrage of what will be done, you end up feeling it is pushy waffle, especially with lines such as "All I need from you fella is to remember i have the right to re-direct". Not exactly confidence building.

The upshot of it all was that trust is a significant factor, maybe it's me not showing any, but as it's my domain, i need to tread carefully. I'd still be interested to hear from anyone who has already been down this route though.
