Hi Dave,

I just read through your PM and will try and answer your questions. This is still a new idea for m so might need reworking.

To start with the split of 80:20 against my four would ideally be for someone who could come along and do everything with me doing nothing apart from redirecting the DNS.

I can give a bit of time but not a lot due to other things I'm working on.
Ideally the partner would be able to code, throw up a site and get some backlinks. If the site needed updating hopefully they'd be able to do that too.

Revenue (which could be split around 80:20) could be from PPC or affiliate or anything else. We could both view G analytics. If it was going well after the 18 months then it can be extended but probably at a different revenue split

I can help out a bit within this arrangement - just not much.
If a partner had a bigger project in mind that has more earning potential, that I'd need to invest more of my time designing/coding, a more balanced 50:50 split could be used for the revenue and even ownership of the name could be shared indefinitely - depending on the project and how much revenue the partner thinks they can generate.

These are still work in progress ideas.
Just trying to get a balance between it being worthwhile for a partner (rather than the alternative of them developing a name they own) and worthwhile for me (to share 80% of profits for a name that I might be able to develop and keep 100%). Plus balancing involvement.

I'll try and refine the idea. Were there any particular domains that I listed that you thought had potential?

Mate what I would build into any agreement is a minimum performance clause..

For example you agree to have 80/20 for 5 years, however if the site is turning over less than £10 a month in 8 months time then the contract is null and void.

It's a way to save them just pee'ing off after 6 months and then you unable to do anything with the site in the fear they may come back and claim their percentage later.

That's what I do on some of mine...

GW that's a great point. I think I mentioned something about a performance stipulation during the period in my first post - just forgot to put it in the last post.

Allowing some time like you said - 8 months (if the term of the agreement is a few years) is a good idea

I dont know what your domains are woop (deliverately not looked due to my next point) but, from experience, these arrangements rarely work unless the domain name is ULTRA generic. Because:

1. Good developers are already doing it - usually for themselves
2. Anyone with an idea, a plan and the inclination will usually "make do" with any domain and simply do it for themselves, unless the one on the table gives that much more value to the project
3. Any JV's Ive seen go ahead in the past have ended in tears when the "I can do it" half of the venture turns out to be either too young/lacking in skills/lacking in inclination/growingly disgruntled in doing all the work.

I wish you all the best and hope it goes well - but do please take my caveat on board - in the very least to get some assurances on both sides and sketch out in advance the "what if" scenarios IF things go sideways

Thanks Badger - your advice is spot on.

My hopes aren't too high - but I just wanted to get something happening with some of my domains that I'm not doing anything with.

Maybe a JV won't come out of this thread. So far people have shared some ideas in the thread and by PM, so i think it's useful even if this just acts as a catalyst to share experiences.

Hi Badger,

You made some good points

Anybody thinking of making an offer like this should remember that a "bought in" existing domain with some traffic is going to be more attractive to the developer - otherwise as you point out, the developer may as well register a new domain and keep all the money

At the very least, some basic keyword rich content should be hosted on the site's index page - so that the site is already indexed and "aged" ready for the developer to do their thing

I'd recommend a WordPress blog - with SEO permalinks and a 100 strong pinglist set up from the start - about an hours work including about 5 PLR or Ezinearticles posts in 1 category named using primary keyword phrase

If the domain owner really doesn't have the time - then I'd do this for 20 pounds paid via PayPal - you may even be able to find someone cheaper

To Rob - re. getting blogs created and active

I've just changed to a new SEO'd theme so I'll show a couple of sites using it - these can either

1/ single sidebar right hand navigation using plain blue 790x78 header graphic

or

2/ double sidebar right hand navigation using using plain blue 960x78 header graphic

your own graphic header can be swapped in later - not important to start with - text content is more important

2 sites using double sidebar:
Car Insurance
Life Insurance

these are using auto content generation as well as manual article posts - cost for auto content is 5 pounds per category (using Google news)- 1 category is enough to start with - and auto content is optional anyway

I also use a twitter plugin - you can set this up or I can do it for 5 pounds - brings traffic from twitter - useful while waiting for rankings

ditto banner rotator

Link building - no problem or you can get anyone to do this - I recommend comments in forum posts - but if you have enough domains to promote I can use a blog posting service - using other people's blogs to post article excerpts and dofollow keyword hyperlinks
