Question Domaining - Distraction or Secret Weapon?

This one's a question for the domainer/developers. As usual, I have a seemingly endless To Do list, and "domain management" seems to take up a fair bit of time. Of course I love domains, but for a bit of fun, I wanted to ask the other domainer/developers:

"Do you think domaining is more of a distraction or is it your secret weapon to improve site performance?"

For me, it's a bit of both. I feel an early interest in domaining has given me some cracking names which will I hope will prove their worth, but at the same time I must have spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours tending to my domaining activities!!

What do others think?

I think a lot of people forget to factor time. Time is most valuable, more than money.

Distraction, for sure. I'll post more about this in a few days time...

I think one issue was that when the internet was getting going, there appeared to be an abundance of opportunities, so you felt you had to have a domain to cover the opportunity, and that goes on the notorious dev pile. I have overestimated the speed at which I can build sites, yet I only have a small domain portfolio by domainer standards.

The good thing about having a domain is that it is probably the primary motivator for me building a site in a sector. I don't like being wasteful, so it will make me put up a site, even if it is a bit basic.

Judging by the flood of sales threads, including from some well known portfolio holders many seem to beginning to find them a distraction.

Interesting times.

Massive distraction for me. I should be developing but I'm constantly checking here/DL and buying names I'll probably never dev... I'm not very productive ATM! Addictive though.

Looking at my list, I have 2 completely undeveloped domains and 2 which are mostly done. All the rest are developed.

I only have about 20 domains though (awww) because I'm not a domainer! But I have been buying lots more names since I joined Acorn. I think there will be a top-end limit on the number of domains I have though, because of management. Not sure what it will be at this point, maybe 30 or 40.

Always been a sideline for me that I do for fun (and hopefully profit). It's somewhere in the middle for me, half way between the two.
