Anyone fancy a challenge? - Develop an unloved domain

Anyone interested in having a little competition between acorn members?

I was thinking a little competition could be fun, something along the lines of:
  • Pick a domain you have been meaning to work on but have never got round to
  • Start developing it on 1st September
  • Keep a brief account of work on here
  • Person who makes the most money by end of the year wins

Maybe the winner could get a link from all the other sites that took part?

Just thought it may be a little fun/helpful to some.

What do you reckon - any interest?

I'd be up for that, could be a bit of fun. Contestants could also vote for best looking and most original idea etc. I'll start thinking about which domain could be used. Similarly we could register a domain on September 1st and do it from there so there are no advantages in the domain itself?

Definitely sounds interesting - would prefer it to be open to existing domains, on the condition they've never had a "real" site on them before (parking/sales pages don't count)...

All well and good but surely the quality of the domain plays a major issue on the potential earnings.

Edwin no doubt has some incredible keyword domains with high exacts where as i could not hope to get that kind of advantage.

What about limiting the exacts to less than 200?

Also, is the earning through adsense or any possible means?

Let everyone do as they please and I bet I can pick the winner as soon as the domains are announced. Or at least I can rule out the ones who have zero chance.

Limit the exact matches to 200 and I'll be surprised if any of you make more than minimum wage for your efforts

A limit on exacts would level the playing field a little. I mean some of us have exact names with many many many thousands which isn't fair on the new or lil man which thousands are a dream.

An exact limit of around 1 to 3k would be more realistic.

I have a few names which could use a kick like this

200 local exacts? If that's the case, I wouldn't bother.

Edwin may have some corkers, but he'd still be starting from scratch like the rest of us, and he may very well choose a niche that is already saturated making it almost impossible to rank high enough to get any traffic anyway...

Some people who take part may have access to authority sites, so maybe there does need to be some kind of rules in place that ensures that none of the sites you own or have access to link to the site in the competition?

Maybe also restrict how much you can spend on the site each month, whether that be content, ppc, buying links, etc?

Just a thought.

I tend to agree with frog, let everyone do as they please.

I don't even intend to use an exact match domain (shock, horror)

Exacts aren't everything, and they still need links and content to rank, and the competition only runs for 4 months.

Just thought it was a good way to make use of some undeveloped domains - regging domains that meet strict criteria seems pointless
