DEV CONTEST 2011: TopToysThisChristmas (it's a .co.uk)

Here's my entry for the competition: TopToysThisChristmas (in the .co.uk)

Domain: Registered the domain name from scratch a couple of days ago.

Background: The recent HP TouchPad shopping frenzy alerted me to just how much traffic there is in "desperate" purchase situations. Judging by the mass of news articles every year about hard to find toys, there will be a lot of such situations between now and Christmas. Yes, it's a VERY seasonal site, but that seasonality should play right into the competition.

Next Steps: I am going to start researching relevant keywords, and also looking into the kind of toys that could become hits at Christmas time. I also have a few ideas for an original "spin" on the niche, because there are a lot of relatively similar sites already fighting it out in the SERPS, so clearly if there's an "angle" I can exploit that should help get me going.

Quick request: please don't post the full domain in any follow-up comments, thanks. I don't want it spidered until the site is ready.

Definitely a good area to be in for the comp.

I read earlier in the year about Hamleys tipping a £200 inflatable ride-in Dalek as the top present this year so could be worth a look

Good luck

aaclapham is on a distinguished road

Nice domain - I started my affiliate life with a 1 page toy site showing the top 10 xmas toys and where you could get them. I ppc'd the top toys and amended the links as and when stocks came in.

It was amazing watching the sales come in and sourcing the toys as they sold out fast.

That was back in 2006 when you could get away with a 1 page site and ppc anything!

Good Luck!

Quick update: nothing but research so far, and I'm not done yet. I've identified about 70 "top toys" and also started to piece together the flow of information that's likely to come in between now and Christmas based on who announced what last year, and when they made those announcements. Should be enough for me to put together the rudiments of a site, and then I can expand on it and flesh it out as time passes.

Next up: some research into CSS for styling tables elegantly. I had some old links in a file somewhere that I'd put aside for safekeeping - if only I can put my finger on it...

Not sure in what capacity you were looking to style your tables Edwin, but stumbled across this article with a nice variety of table styles:

Thanks for that. I seem to remember "Veerle" from somewhere, so you've given me a good lead to pursue.

The Top Toys is an interesting choice because like you say, it has been heavily attacked by affiliates. Whilst it's never been a major focus for me, I do have a Top Toys site, which I give a quick brush up each year. I have made a few sales from it, mainly from niche toy searches, but I've never pushed it majorly.

I mention this here because it shows how keyphrase domains are treated on each of the search engines. For "the top toys", I'm nowhere on Google, but bottom of page one for Yahoo and Bing.

Rgds
