Adsense Link Units

I've been trying out the adsense link units on a site and they aren't performing all that well. Is this the experience of others? I hadn't tried them out before now. How do you find the clickthrough rate and CPC when compared to typical text/image ads?

Edit: Additional info as no-one replied! In a test on my funny pictures site I'm finding that click throughs are high but CPC is much lower than than typical image/text ads. They don't take up much room so I can see the use of them, but I had slightly higher expectations.

Google adsense is very risky, their cpc rates are so low, and they may disable your accout for no-reason, i was having 100USD in my account whn they emailed me, YOUR ACCOUNT DISABLED. When i read the story, they said you have invalid clicks.

Infact i did not make any click. huhhhh...
try adbrite, contextweb and adwooz

they are best in contextual ads and try cj..com this is best affiliate ad program.

It depends on a lot of factors really, including how advertisers are bidding. Some hours/days I'll have clicks worth 20p each, but at other times they'll be 80p (similar ads on similar topics).

It also depends on what, if any, types you have blocked, what your visitors are interested in (e.g. if Google chooses to display an ad based on their interests rather than the topic of your site then you may have a click that's worth a lot of money), and how targeted your site is. Do you know what kind of topics people are actually clicking through on? You can always disable sites/areas that pay low.

Depends how popular your sites are, what topics they're about, where your audience is from, etc. etc. Adsense can be extremely rewarding in the right circumstances - we've served over 60,000,000 Adsense page impressions since June 2003 and have done well out of doing so.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes Blossom, I keep a keen eye on the categories of ad that appeal to visitors and block as many as possible that do not. It's definitely made a difference which is pleasing.

Edwin - Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's working out well for me. I've been experimentin with various approaching in terms of ads, but hadn't really explored with link unit options until now. I'll stick with it for a bit and see how it works out. It might be a bit too soon to judge to be honest.

Link units have performed better for me when they are on top of the page compared to their placements in the middle , sidebar or in the bottom section. People tend to click the link units that are on the top of the page as they look as an integral part of the page. (728 * 15) is the best to go.

we had a click through rate of 1.55% last month averaging 27p. If Ed is getting something similar then 60,000,000 Ad impressions, then this equates to around £250,000 which isn't to be sniffed at!

Historically, The amount of money I earn from Link Units per click is FAR small than any other type of Adsense ad.

I choose not to use them because if someone clicks one, you loose the visitor, usually for a very very low pennies.

I also don't think they give a good user experience, they just lead to a page of sponsored search results on Google.

I think you make some good points here, especially about losing visitors to other sites for pennies. This is no doubt an especially significant problem for sites with high page view counts. Thanks for your input.

This thread made me think about my Adsense.
I actually looked at the categories section for the first time and blocked quite a few that didn't earn in the last 30 days or were irrelevant or the kind of thing I don't want on my sites!
I should really look into optimising my ads a bit as I make very little from them...
