Hi

I hope someone can maybe help me. A domain that I would like to buy is currently suspended and it's drop date is 13th August.

I have booked it with a few sites but someone else has also booked it at 2 others, including caught.co.uk

I see that caught.co.uk is a popular drop-catcher - do they secure most names or is not necessarily the case?

Is there any likelihood of me being able to manually capture the domain or is that not likely if it has been booked elsewhere already?

If it is maybe possible to beat it manually, is there a certain time that domains drop such as midnight for example?

Caught. No. They are both good and popular but with 'popular' comes large amounts of names booked = less chance of securing highly competed names.

Not a hope in hells chance of manually registering it.

Book it with as many catchers as you can, both public and private, if possible.

Domains can drop any time over the 24 hour period.

I have never booked a domain before in this way so am not all that familiar with the process.

I have gone through a number of sites booking the domain:

DomainRecover.co.uk
DomainMonster.com
dacr.co.uk
DomainWatchList.co.uk
DropCatcher - will buy a credit for £29 and book here as well

Are these considered as public? What are private ones?

If you could maybe spare a minute to advise where else I should do this I would really appreciate it!!

Is it possible to contact the current registrar and ask them about backordering it? They do not advertise a drop catching service on their site though.

Private catchers are people like me who occasionally offer their services. I don't take advance bookings and only offer to catch for others once I've cleared my list for the day, but others will – especially if you tempt them with a higher than normal catch fee.

Might be worth you starting a thread there a week or so before the drop date, requesting their services.

Re: private catchers is there much of a risk that they 'may' want to keep the domain themselves if they catch it? I guess it's safe to only use those on here who have a good trader rating like yourself is it?

If you don't mind me asking, how does a private catcher manage to beat a public one who I presume has bigger resources to do this stuff - or is that not necessarily the case?

Re: contacting the current registrar - is that no use unless it was me who registered the domain previously?

Sometimes because they have better scripts but mostly because they load fewer names - some might only load one at a time.

Practically no risk if you use people who post in that section of the forum. Check peoples trader rep and only deal with people who have a decent history. I wouldn't recommend booking with a new member who has 3 posts and zero rep.

No use contacting the current registrar, they have no 'legal' way to transfer the name to you.

One more thing, when contacting private catchers, be careful about divulging the name too early until you know if they will load it FOR YOU, not for themselves.

Word early communications something along the line of...

I would like to book a name beginning with the letter D, do you have anything booked beginning with that letter for x date?

As most private catchers will just have a handful of bookings max, that might be enough info, or they might come back with something like... as long as it isn't doghouses.co.uk, that one is already booked.
