urgent advice required!!

last night i regged d2d.co.uk.. today I have an email... telling me that they are snatching it back!!... is this bad luck or do I have a chance to stop this??

this was a prenom domain that hasn't been used for years!!

The day after a drop its reclaimed seems quite suspect however it could just be a coincidence.

Drops are made after Nominet tries to contact the owner of the name, if there is no renewal then the name is dropped.

This is the Nth name I have heard about that has been reclaimed, with varying degrees in time between suspension and drop.

Nominet need to implement a cut off point where previous registrants claims for a name are just too late.

What if this was supercrackingname.co.uk which was sold with a price tag to match? Who would be responsible for the mistake? Would the buyer have to lose the name and the cash?

I really do not condone or expect this kind of behaviour from a leading authority for the domain name industry in the uk. How an error of such a nature can occur is beyond me.

If it has been dettaged and suspended for many years chances are the original registrant has been notified at the last minute by someone at Nominet or in the domain business for a small recompense, otherwise such timing is purely coincidental and you may also win the lottery jackpot this weekend haha.

I'd question their ruling and demand an explanation of the error? I see this only fair.

You are in a very unfortunate situation but not alone as I know a few people who have fallen to this peril also.

Funnily enough I've just had one of these notices from Nominet as well... Very bizarre.

Just spoke with Nominet & asked them to confirm in writing what happened!
basically they are allowed to make errors without any liability!

Having just looked into this it appears that we don't have a leg to stand on.

I do agree with the concept that, where the registry makes an error, a registrant should not lose a domain name.

However, when the original registrant is dissolved and the domain is just going to end up in the hands of the treasury solicitor, it's quite annoying.

Oh well, such is life...

We receive 40 - 50 emails a week from Nominet requesting contact info for Pre-Nom domains that we hold. Sometime we are able to oblige, other times not.

This is always at least 20 weeks before I see the name drop however.

We've had two domains taken back by Nominet, in three years and a few thousand registrations. It's annoying, but nothing we can do and it only happens rarely. I guess it's tough if you only register a few names and one of those is reclaimed.

don't worry no Nominet emails...

just a quick update..

I did a bit of digging around... I used to work for the company that owned d2d.co.uk, the company was sold in 1997 to celestica.com... d2d are still registered as active with a proposal for dissolution with UK Companies House... which means that the Treasury Solicitor shouldn't be getting his dirty sticky paws on the domain quite yet!

One has to question the way Nominet carry out their investigations into unused prenom domain names... by my reckoning the company that purchased design to distribution (d2d ltd), were & still should be the rightful owners of that domain name... or at least have had the opportunity of re-registering it! If Nominet mistakenly drop a name like this � it makes you wonder how competent they are tracking down any previous owners of these domains.. I�m certainly sceptical about their process!
