Hey,

I can't afford £100k right now

Why don't we form a consortium to buy it between us. We could all have shares.

Like they did with cowboys.com.

I think we are going to have to raise at least £200k to be in with a chance.

OK who is in then?

Hi Mo

What a great idea...

If I can sell bands, cardiff.co.uk and a few others I'll be in.

I know a few others who might also be interested.

Great! Anybody else going to sell off some of their generics so they can join in the action? You will kick yourself later if you let the opportunity pass you by.

I might have to sell cock.co.uk

They did a kind of consortium thing on namepros(dot)com last year. They set a limit of 20 members and each member put their money or what they could afford into a pot and they would have votes between them as to what domains to bid on at snapnames.

Obviously the amount of money you put in at the start would decide your percentage share of the profits once you came to resell it. It was a quick turnover thing (flipping the domain) so they wouldn't sit on it for too long and reinvest it. Gradually they would go up the rungs of the lucrative domain ladder. That was the plan anyway. I don't know whether or not it worked out, as when they got their 20 members they conversed privately off the forums so people wouldn't know what they were bidding on in snapnames and compete with them.

Anyway I think it would be a good idea if acorn domains did a similar sort of thing, perhaps letting one of the admins of the site take charge and we pool our money with them to ensure fairplay and security.

Anyone have any opinions on this?.

Andy.

Wouldn't really work with .uk as there isn't a bidding type drop system. Majority of names that drop go into the hands of private catchers who pay £5.88 inc vat for them.

So that leaves you with secondary market purchases of which there's little profit to be made "flipping" them or contacting end users/owners of decent generic names and offering them below market rate which i'm sure people prefer to do by themselves (it doesn't take 20 people).

The only way in which I think it could work is if say 20 people put in at least £10k each to buy a 1st class generic to develop into a revenue making website and pooled resources and technical knowledge for development.

The above wouldn't be worth doing with anything less than £200k though IMO.

Hi Jordan,

It doesn't have to be restricted to the .uk extension. So snapnames could be a very viable option for catching .coms. Also you could make it a condition that one of the members of the consortium would be someone who could catch co.uk domains/have the software for catching .co.uk names privately.

As for approaching endusers and offering them below market value "it doesn't take 20 people" I agree but you would if they came back with a higher counter that was still below market value but out of your budget.

Anyway I'd be interested if someone on here was to start a domain buying consortium but I don't have the 10k capital to start with that you're talking about Jordan, I'd enter with 1K, even if it meant I had less of a say over what domains were bought. Like I said before it's about going up the rungs of the laddder, starting low and building up, before you know it we might hit the 200k point to go into the generic keyword .com market.

I do like your point though of not just "flipping" a domain but making it in to a website first, could exponentially up the value of the domain.

Andy.

True but I know ******* also do this in the exclusive section with some BIG budgets, I also think .com is too competative and the prices paid (even at snapnames) are far too high for any great immediate returns.

As for some one catching names with their own software for the consortium I don't see how this works, the quality of names dropping these days isn't really worth the effort in any case.

Entirely possible I suppose but in the same way what's stopping a single person climbing that ladder themselves starting smaller and gaining momentum?

I agree it could work in some degree on the .com/.net side of things but for .uk (Which this forum is based around) I can't see it going very far.

If the consortium was for funding an uber domain that had solid plan behind making it work..perhaps even as a business (i've a few domains in mind) and we could muster £1/4m-£1/2m between 10-20 players then that's something i'd look at. There are a lot of prime names out there wasting away that could be made into very profitable businesses without massive amounts of time or money.
