Domain registrars that allow sub-domain setup

I'm having a bit of trouble trying to find a good registrar that will allow me to set up sub-domains on my domains, to point at my own nameservers.

I used to have this feature with 1&1, but for a number of reasons I'd had enough of them and wanted to move to an alternative provider.

On the recommendation of quite a few people, I moved to Heart, only to find that I can't set up sub-domains, unless I stump up for an add-on product!

I don't have many domains, so I'm not too bothered about the individual price for each domain. It's mostly the control and quality of service that I'm bothered about.

You would be better relying on your host to handle this rather than registrar it would be easier.

I use Daily myself maybe worth shooting them an email and ask.

Not too sure how that would work, as I run my own server and in the past have normally set up ns1.mydomain.co.uk and ns2.mydomain.co.uk to point to my server's IP address.

I'll have a look at Daily and see if they'll allow this.

If you run your own server then setup the sub domains on your server. Just edit httpd.conf

But if my domains point to ns1 and ns2 from within my registrar's control panel... How will they know where mydomain.co.uk is, if they don't have an A record pointing to the server's IP address?

The subdomains, in any case, are already set up on my server.

If you have your own box, just install a DNS server and you can manage all your zones exactly how you want to. If you don't understand DNS at a low level, install a free control panel like Webmin and you can do it easier.

All you have to do is set the main domain to your server and then

create a virtual host config in httpd.conf file

<VirtualHost xx.xx.xx.xx:80>
ServerName *.domain.co.uk
ServerAlias www.*.domain.co.uk

etc etc settings...

</VirtualHost>

create a wildcard dns in /var/named/subdomain.db

$TTL 604800
@ 86400 IN SOA ns1.domain.co.uk. yourname.domain.co.uk. (
1 ; Serial
604800 ; Refresh
86400 ; Retry
2419200 ; Expire
604800 ) ; Negative Cache TTL

IN NS .
*.domain.co.uk. IN A xx.xx.xx.xx

;@ 86400 IN SOA ns1.doamin.co.uk. yourname.domain.co.uk. (

After spending a couple of hours fiddling with the Heart control panel, in a last-ditch attempt to try to love it, it looks like I might have resolved my issue - based on a hunch.

I reverted to using Heart's nameservers, then:

- added ns1 and ns2 as two sub-domains with an A record in Heart's DNS configuration
- went back to the Nameserver configuration page and changed from Heart's nameserver to my own. This time, the Heart control panel accepted my nameservers.
