be extremely careful buying domains!

I know its obvious, but i have had a guy default on a transfer and keep the money a few months ago. I have been in touch with the police who referred it to CID. I waited 4 months to find anothr method before i went to the police as i didnt want to waste their time.

Anyway, the CID officer told me on the phone today that he was following up but was so busy at the moment as he was dealing with over 100 cases of this EXCACT same thing with domains (not the same guy)! He said its a new particular rife form of fraud and urged me to be very careful.

I would say unless you know the person to use escrow and be very careful, when selling a name also good to remember that paypal can be retracted by the buyer after the transaction. If you do want to go ahead without escrow, take a phone number, address etc and get on the phone with the person before hand.

Wouldn't this type of thing be cover by the small claims court Rob?
I would presume the police would say it's a civil matter and to pursue it through small claims.

Technically its Fraud and receiving money with the intent to deceive Scott and thus is referred to the CID as a criminal matter. In this instance i had the persons address and assumed that a call from the police would be enough but it turns out that this guy has been up to a bit more so they want to take it further.

It was a fair amount of money but just as much the principle of letting him get away with an obvious deception. He did the same to 2 other acorn members as well that i know of and set up other usernames to sell his domains.

Doesn't PayPal's protection limit this to physical goods than can be posted and also require a formal dispute process to be started?

You may well be right,to be honest i was only going on other posts i had read about paypal chargebacks and domain names. not sure whether the forms counted as physical goods or not but im sure others will know.
