I took a punt on terence.tel yesterday when the registry opened up at normal prices. The whois system is a shambles and takes ages to update even if you go direct on port 43 to whois.nic.tel. Shocking.

OMG..I'm such a hypocrite

Sorry, but couldn't resist the open registration period to get the vanity one of beasley.tel

If anyone thinks they're going to get rich from these, I think they're very much mistaken. They are purely for publishing your contact details, and those of family members.

Dave

BTW - if anyone wants to update their DNA Pro settings to check any tel names, its 'Edit' - 'Data Extraction Settings' - 'Domain Lookup' and the whois server is - whois.nic.tel making sure that you have entered a .tel name into the lookup list and highlighted it first.

More bullshit hype, courtesy of the RSS feed at base of acorn....

Talk about stinging you hard at the start..$375 a pop for 3 yrs, they're certainly making sure they get their pound of flesh from you, before you realise its waste of time extension like so many of the other recent 'must haves'

Ok, you talked me into registering my surname, now what do I do with it?

Not been following anything about .Tel as wasn't planning on getting involved but guess it'll be too late to get surname if I decide I want it.

BTW - Whois updated immediately - purchased via 123-reg

The flaw, he said, with Enum was that it demanded people be on the web. By contrast, .tel will work with many different devices such as smart phones.

Erm , how would that smart phone get info? Ah yes... by going online

He added that .tel domains have a "friending mechanism" that will grant close friends access to private areas that give more ways for a person to be contacted.

"It will become their place on the cloud," said Mr Mahdavi.

I am guessing that is the cloud next door to cloud cuckoo land

Hi

I had about 30 .tel domains on backorder for went it all went live yesterday.

I secured about 12 of them with domain monster, bit more expensive at £17 each.

I thought I would take a punt and try a few.

Can't see what the big deal is they are only peanuts to buy and it has only cost me just over £200.

Not bothered at all if I lose it , but im a great believer in taking a chance.

You win some and you lose some.

Regards

Gav

I picked up one to see what the fuss was all about admittedly, I happily logged into the control panel, typed in a few things and oh......Telnic | telProxy that's it?

I'm confused as to all the hype about it not working like a traditional domain which maps to an IP address, especially after reading this:
.tel DNS Mapping - Information Stored as DNS - .tel Domains

Do an nslookup:
Quote:
Macintosh:~ davidmiddlehurst$ nslookup iseka.tel
Server: 10.1.1.1
Address: 10.1.1.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: iseka.tel
Address: 194.77.54.2

Okay, seems just like a normal domain. Checks the webserver headers with Netcraft:

Netcraft What's That Site Running Results

Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1

Seems a load of rubbish to me, standard way of a domain working, only they host the business card thing on their own webserver.

Information stored in the DNS?......NO
