When you reg a domain and you get the usual spam on it when it's just been regd, where do the spammers get their lists? is it when I list on sedo on some sort of 'latest additions' or by them checking a whois resource of recently acquired domains. How do they do it?

With .coms the details are made pretty public. With .co.uk's if it is a domain that has been previously used then you will get a backlog of spam retries hit you. It wouldn't surprise me if sedo was scraped as well, I have seen very bizarre ways of getting hold of email addresses by spammers in the last couple of months. I also wouldn't be surprised if a few of the cheaper registries sold off lists of domains.
