Page Ranking query

o.k chaps,

been buying domains names for about 8 months, got about 700+, but am a complete amateur with them.

Just got a quick question, how come when I've parked them on the sorry'est bare holding page I have for the last 6 months, they still hold a google ranking of 3.

vpas co uk
and shoutfm co uk

to name but 2. nothing been on those site for 6 months since I bought them and drop time before that.

Not sure how they have that ranking and my other developed sites have nothing yet,

Because they have backlinks from other PR sites. Check your stats and you will see what sites are linking to these domains...

Indeed, pagerank is a measure of the importance of the page based upon other pages that link back to it that pass pagerank. So its a product of inbound links.

Cheers guys, they have a couple from certain places.

so really I could have the best working site in the world, but if no one links to it, I could be beaten by a simple holding page.

That must annoy some people who put effort into promoting there site,

Yes indeed. I've developed some nice sites in the past with decent content and lots of it yet ranked nowhere as I couldn't get any decent inbound links.
