not sure this is the right place but couldn't work out where to put.

hi guys and girls,

what would you do if u had 10K to invest in domain names .

trafic sites that are parked ?

traffic sites with affiliate links ?

generating returns of what % 15% does that seem low or high ?

tld for niches ?
tld for geo sites ?

.com/.net/.co.uk

Brum,

It's funny you should mention that 10k, it's what I'll be getting when the ployers stick there two fingers up at me.

Hi

Suggest you keep your money locked away - don't buy a single name for at least 3 months - and just read some the posts on this forum.

Best advice I can give, if you are after income then you need to as Rob has said understand the risk / reward, which to spell it out means TMs versus Generics.

Best Regards

It is easily possible to do that, however those who know what to do will probably wont explain things as they will be doing it themselves. Not helpful I know, but again , being wary about those promising great returns on buying their names / systems as you have to ask why are they not DIY'ing it.

The other factor to think about is you could buy one or two names for your £10,000 , have zero to low earnings (the former is often good to protect you from idiotic claims and lower the investment risk) and cash out in 3 years time. However if ongoing revenue is important then looking at earnings of a domain is vital, likewise what extra value you can add.

Adding value is a tricky one, as more damage to a domain can be done by incorrect development, likewise there is no point spending £5k developing a £5k name just to sell it for £10k . Similarly , it is worth thinking about potential buyers before embarking on development as they may use the name in a seperate area and thus development time money and effort is pointless.

Agree totally about reading reading reading and being reluctant to spend! There are other domain forums , domainstate is one of the other good ones.

TMs v Generics is a good summary of risk, however there are some generics that rise and fall - for example does DVD related names have long term future?

Looking at the three year period, it is worth thinking about 2005 prices and what those names are worth today as for example, £10,000 would have bought probably 30 ish decent three letter .co.uk names at reseller prices, if not more, which today would be worth double for sure. LLL.co.uk's are an example of one of the safest domain investments, but do have a lower return than the domain market as a whole.

There are lots and lots of variables - and deciding which route to take is only half the battle, getting an actual name can be tricky.

Investing £10k and making the returns you want is doable, however it is even easier to splurge it on a pile of useless domains that will cost you more in legal problems and other issues - be careful!

Cheers,
Rob.
