using broker to aquire domain
I am considering using Sedo or Afternic to attempt to acquire a domain for me. The domain in question appears to have the registrant details hidden by using a company called Moniker Privacy Services so I am wondering if the broker will have any joy contacting the owner.
At $69 I obviously do not want to pay this amount if its a complete waste of money. Thanks in advance Paul |

Normally when they are using a privacy service on the WHOIS, you can still e-mail the owner so have you tried that yet?
If that doesn't work it may be worth contacting Moniker as although unlikely they might help in putting you in touch. Other than that at $69 it doesn't seem too much but how they are going to get round the privacy protection I'm not sure. |

Thanks accelerator
Well I have tried just guessing the email address of the owner but the whois records show a support@moniker email address for the registrant. I have emailed to this email address but received no reply. Hence I wonder what Sedo or Afternic can do that I can't to get in touch |

You could try archive.org to see if the domain was a website in the past, if so it may have contact details on it.

Thanks Grant
Just tried that and got the following: We're sorry, access to http://www.blah.com has been blocked by the site owner via robots.txt. |

meaning...there is no point of using Sedo's broker service.
And they are doing the same as you do but charging you on top. Hello I was interested in a domain which is linked to a dead page or page 404 for the last 6 months. The domain has value to me. A quick appraisal and domain score analysis give me the following. "52" Domain score: 1 (worst) ... 1,000 (best) - exponential scale. So, the domain is not very good...but I still want it. I ve tried to contact the owner via the who is, and no reply. I therefore decided to contact Sedo Broker service hoping them to get a better result. On 28/02/2008 I ve been charge something like $69 very quickly. On 07/03/2008, I got my first email to confirm that they had started working on the acquisition. The domain is made of 2 keywords. They decided to do the valuation on 3 totally different keywords and compare them with porn/adult/betting/gambling , french (the domain is in spanish) and IDN domains. Saying that the domain should be valued at least $USD 5000. Anyway, I ask them to start negociation. And today I receive the following: "Unfortunately, the owner of the domain has either chosen not to respond to my attempts to contact him and is hence not interested in a sale or the details listed in the domain owner records are incorrect. Therefore, we have no choice but to abort our efforts to acquire this domain. " So, what the point of using Sedo Broker service ????? I can do this on my own...I send an email to the who is, no respond...oh ok... or the guy respond asking for more...I tell him...no problem I valued your domain 20 times what it is worth...do you want to sell it, he says yes... Oh...I ve just became a broker ! I cannot guarantee that I will get your domain though. Oh, and keep in mind that I am charging the guy who is selling the domain as well, as he decided to list his domains with us. rrrrrrrrrgghghghghghgh

Never understood why people use brokers to buy a domain you don’t need them… If someone wants to sell a domain they sell it for what they want for it not what a broker says its worth ….? (who is charging both sides) if your buying pay what you can afford domains that make you money just from the name are very few If you can build a brand around a word then you can make ££££ think google normal folks have to sell, offer services or alike from them if the names global its only any good if your selling global ? its no different from any other company asset If you want it bad send a letter phone try a hundreed different email combinations if they do not repond they are probally not looking to sell ?
If you still think you need a broker I have a game idea you stick a piece of paper to your head go out in the wind when it blows off chase it around send me £30 and I’ll send you the instructions and the game ? Last edited by namealot; 15-05-2008 at 04:07 PM. |

brokers will be very useful when the UK advertisign and media industry wakes up to domain names as marketing devices. Some companies already do this, but the problem is how to get to the right people. If you have those contacts then you should be able to make a very good living brokering domains AND provide a service that people without the contacts would find very useful.
