The "what's in a name" 25years of the DNS anniversary conference was interesting over what the major players think about opening up the root zone... first 4 videos the best.

The intro sounded like Carl Sagan until I realised it was one of the co-ordinators of the meeting.... great voice!

Well, the value of a particular domain is always dictated by its advertising benefits. I don't see any major concerns in the short to medium term future for .co.uk and .com, but you should never have all your eggs in one basket and don't get too carried away purely on domain trading - try developing or selling some before accumulating too many that aren't being put to use. Although I think any major problems are unlikely you can never discount it entirely but I still think that premium domains in .co.uk or .com should make good investments.

It does cost a fair whack to set up .acorn plus proving tech ability to run the thing.

Personally I think it will hurt .com / .uk etc as much as .info .eu .mobi and the likes are, and the real damage will be to domainers wallets who landrush each time.

Are loans.co.uk really going to move to er, Loans.loans ? Or Natwest.loans ?

Lots more cruft and lots of cash for those running them... domaining migh not be a case of regging names but more running names...!

Yeah, you may be right about the expense of running them, I sure hope so

How would these domains be run? Would it be a case of buying a server then, or not?

I can just imagine Apple having one, free website and .apple domain name when you buy a mac!

$250k and proof you can do it, its not the free-for-all that is currently suggested.

.mac would be a possibility though, however with Apple running it you *must* use apple services to qualify for a domain? can't see the 'free' .uk being threatened by balkanised domain extensions.

I think the 'proof' here is far more relevent than the cost.

In the long term there will be more 'generic' tlds... There's a thread here somewhere about opening 'sub-country' tlds, and a memorable couple of days on non-steer where Tommy called everyone ludite anti-scottish morons, or words to that effect.

IMO... no more new country codes, unless they totally turn-around and create a whole new batch of 3letter ones... I mean dozens\hundreds, not just a few. A few extra continental amalgamations possibly.

Generic ones will be judged harshly on their merits, and most it not all will be thrown out.

The root zone controllers at ICANN etc will NOT just open out their domain - for want of a better word, to a free for all. It's a private organisation after all.
