How Is This New Domain Shake Up Going To Affect Traders?

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what effect this new domain system (.love, .bank, .disappointing... etc...) is going have on our prospective money making, as there will be thousands upon thousands of TLDs avaliable, so surely no one will be bothered about buying a .com or .co.uk any more?

In a reverse manner it potentially makes .com and .co.uk more sought after as it has a devaluing effect on the weaker .tlds now there are more of them!

Serious traders will most likely completely ignore them. I think they'll be about as popular as .museum etc.

Has it been confirmed? I got the impression that the controllers of the root zone aren't keep on opening it up.

Who are going to control each tld? It's not an easy OR cheap proposition. It's not as though Joe Bloggs from round the corner is going to decide, hey I want .bloggs and hey presto a new TLD is formed.

Give me chance to reply guys! I get half way through writing a reply and I get a new E-Mail saying I have a reply, obviously a hot topic

In response to tifosi's comment, ICANN seem to be expecting these new domains to be authorised. However, I sympathise with your point that it will be a very expensive operation.

Ratboy, I can understand that side of the argument, but do you honestly you belief it will be so? I'm not saying your wrong, in fact I hope you're right, I'm just worried that these new domain names will completely devalue top level domains because they can just market their new extensions, and over time people will get used having to know the correct extension and com/net/org will fade into the background, becoming almost obsolete?

Ask my mum (someone I often ask for the laymans view - and no she isn't a member here ) and she has just got used to .co.uk and .com. They have to make sense to people like my mum to have a chance in the mainstream (marketing, tv etc) to ever have a chance of devaluing already used and well known branding. Have you ever seen a .info on a TV ad?

Good point ratboy, but .info is considerably newer than .co.uk, and maybe we'll be hearing more of it in the future... oh who am I kidding? You provide such a good argument I can't compete :P

I'm just worried that the system will change and this whole way of making money will completley disappear.

Stick with .co.uk's or .com's, there is nothing I can think of or on the horizon that will stop them. The only remote possibility os if nom goto .uk's and drop the .co.uk's but I imagine it would only ever pass if the people who owned the .co.uk's got the first option at the same .uk's

But even that is remote

Erm it has already hasn't it? Pure domain speculation and drop catching that is? There are some other exciting ways of making money with domains, and many are clearly obvious here. I'd follow the recent trend of developing domains, and note that their success if generally tied into their positon in Google. I deal with hundreds of small businesses a week and they all want rankings and positon.. This method kind of overrides the tld... ish. My money is with .co.uk. .com if you have deep pockets.

Good luck with it.
