Domains are a human interface model, so at a human level they have their value. But the web/internet (call it what you will) is an entirely different scenario, and will advance on regardless. IPv6 will bring a new distribution model to market owing to the much greater addressing potential. Today, if something is beginning to fail in your house, you'll notice it and look it up on the internet. Tomorrow, there will be loads of things in your home with thier own unique IP address within designated IP blocks. You'll be getting an automated email offering you price & delivery from China because some server knows your kettle is on the way out. Domains will at some point or another peak, it's a fact.

Possibly, but that'll be one for the next 10-20 years or so. Be assured that there are going to be 1000's of companies soon realising that paying the owners of a server that can tell them the contact details of every central heating pump that is failing in the UK is going to be the next big business model. Google will be shitting itself, unless Google starts to own those servers of course!

Personally, I wouldn't want that level of 'snooping' for want of a better word. I have enough trouble with getting cold calls by phone, I certainly wouldn't want companies contacting me when something needs replacing. And how would they contact you, email? Email needs a domain name.

The phone number system has been basically the same for decades. There is no reason that domain names should be replaced.

Yes, but we'd be talking about a service email, Gmail, etc. One service email for everything is fine. As for snooping, well imagine if it would have been better to know that the alternator on your 18 year old daughters car was on its way out before she broke down in the outside lane of the M6, you'd soon look at the advantages when you've been inconvenienced and she could have been directed by mobile off the motorway to the nearest repair station. Yes, a little far fetched to push the point home, but perfectly possible.

My surname begins with a B, so a few people thought I was also the user "markb" on here
