Obviously if dot cotton came out then i would have a fifth choice. The .org has some good credibility to a global audience, work, health, advisory related etc sit well with .org

Now I take your point and I think younger gen are possibly a bit more savvy and have much greater exposure to .co.uk?

I'm being simples - can you tell me a website that would target a UK only audience where using a .com instead would be a serious disadvantage.

Well, geos would be an obvious one but quite honestly I wouldn't use a .com for any UK targeted site, not as a first choice anyway. 5 – 7 years ago I think most UK companies went with a .com, perhaps 7 out of 10. These days that's more like 2-3 out of 10. I think most British people subconsciously associate .com with American companies, and in many ways .com is their ccTLD.

One of the major turning points, imo, was when when Google started redirecting visitors from google.com to google.co.uk.

My only exception would be something charitable or truly community related where I would let .org.uk creep a bit higher ... but presumably we're all UK-oriented capitalists on here.

I'm not saying someone shouldn't also buy the other major suffixes (especially .com) : that is prudent, provided one doesn't get sucked into every passing fad.

However my view (subject to the exceptions above) would be to use the others as redirects and focus on building the core .co.uk domain.

If you're a UK-based domainer with significant business in .coms (or anything else, for that matter), obviously that doesn't apply.

It depends on whever we thinking about our availability (significance) for a Global market or a local one.

Anyone that has spent time in Australia knows - forget anything that isn't .com.au because it ain't going nowhere,
