Any thoughts on .info domain names ???

As I research possible domain names I am seeing that the .info option is frequently available.

Now I know it does not carry the weight of .com or .co.uk (and maybe others), but - in the context of a useful site for specific information would this be a viable option worth pursuing.

Apologies if this is a dumb Newbie question, but in my scribbles on the train today I was coming up with some possibilities where it seemed it might just be marketable.

Thank in advance

John

the .info does not rank well in Google, a .info can be obtained relatively cheaply for an international domain.

co.uk
com
org.uk
org

These rank well, and in that order in the UK. There are always exceptions to the rules and varied opinions but for developing stick with the above, if you are buying or regging to sell then be aware that the buyer may well know this and you limit your market.

Back to the drawing board

Whibs, - Thanks for that.

Sorry for late thanks - been away over the weekend.

Background was that I had been looking for some specific information, and had used a 'xxxxinformation' search, which brought up a couple of .info sites related to the 'XXXX' word.

yes, the space on the drawing board is getting very limited, with much crossing out, and other scribbles !!!

Still making progress though.

Regards

John

I would say any domain that works well with the .org.uk / .org extension would suit the .info extension.

Yes, it's true, they suck... but it's not impossible to rank them for the UK, also, very little on-selling interest from end users. I'd prob stop registering them

I really do LOL at the bollocks that gets posted on here sometimes....

They can be ranked in the UK just fine.

They are not popular with end users. Domain elitists hate them but if you just put the damn effort in you can rank anything. I even have a .co just off page 1 on a major keyword. Taken me like 5 months to get it there LOL.

I started this over at ******* earlier tonight as I wanted to get some info off a non UK focused audience to back my beliefs up:

http://www.*******.com/f159/examples...ad-465406.html

Google:

Austria
Vienna
Cotswolds

People spout the same garbage about .eu

I've never used a .info myself but I dont have a problem with them.

If you can SEO do it! Traffic is traffic, money is money.

Very strong keyword "one-worders", geos and 3-letter domains most definitely do sell to end users for reasonable money, although as is always the case with end user sales – it takes time, 5+ years in some cases.

I sold pof.info in June for £1250 and ofa.info a month earlier for £510. I tend to sell 2-5 a year at similar prices, and have been since 2003-4. My best .info sale was 123.info for $14,000 back in 2007.

The above said, the wholesale/domainer market is dead – so don't buy any with a view to flipping on quickly for a profit.

- Rob

From a global perspective they appear as many times in the top sales charts as .co.uks. That obviously is potentially misleading due to the number of sub/undeclared £1k Co.uk sales. but to say their "shit" is misleading, I agree they are not a "domainers - flip" and certainly down on the Global .org extension. But companies/businesses with reasonable turn-over do like to have and use them.

I have a few in the luxuryvilla/apartment type use. purely because if I saw a holiday/rental property that "I liked" advertised with a .Info it would certainly pull me in the knowledge that that property is going to be featured - that was my logic for registering around a dozen. As I say they do regularly register the odd low-mid $x,xxx sale, just probably not a good topic on a UK domain board
