![]() | Buying a name
Is it just me or when people come to buy names, the alarm bells start ringing when they claim to be students and can't afford much or for a charity. This says to me that they know the value of domains and want to try and mitigate the prices. So it's ironic that I have found it is those who just offer £50 and say nothing, are actually the people with little funds or knowledge of domain prices. That might be just my findings... but I get a few of this type of thing. Latest comment in "Poor student wanting domain for app site."

yes, they are doing rounds this one below wasn't to email from whois but to my main business site Dear Sirs How much would it cost to buy ; (i have removed domains, one is a plural one word generic product domain and another 2 domains , .co.uk and .com variants) I am not rich and I would be starting a small business on a shoestring, so if the price is unrealistic I will have to simply choose a different name! Best wishes Cathy Ashley (needless to say I deleted email) |

Why care? I quote the same price regardless of how the approach is worded. You'd be amazed how many "poor students" magically find the money when you realise you're not going to fall for that line.

![]() | Same. I don't take much notice of any fanciful tales, I just give them my price. Most of the time I'm just pleased to have received an enquiry!!

I didn't think Frank's was too bad an email, 400 is not bad starting point for a .org.uk the email I got was pisstake though as they were saying if unrealistic, and saying they had no money and would go take a ftr lol, and were after on the top percentile domains and a few others lol and its not even for sale! also clearly a scam gmail address scum |

1) What it is worth to me... do I need it, will I ever use it, do I think the value will go up in future. 2) What it is worth to them...... Have they already started branding, is their time in hunting for another domain going to cost them more than just paying more for the domain. 3) What it is worth to everyone else.... If the deals fall through, what are the chances of selling it to somebody else i.e what would the average joe pay for it. But more the reason for the initial post was that those that try to mitigate the prices to start with tend to have more cash than those that just offer a small amount and the irony behind it.
