I have seen quite a few online store using .co.uk/.com in their name recently which would back up your theory

I really like domain names as brands. The main issue is that "branding" as such is really expensive, i.e. spending money just to tell someone a name. I guess you have to get the thinking cap out for cheap ways to do it, e.g. viral videos.
