The higher the competition, the more sites competing for this term in google search results - therefore the harder it is for your site to rank well. Yes there will be more advertisers too but how many advertisers do you need to make money on clicks?

The higher the competition, the higher the CPC = increased potential earnings? (if your website is aimed solely at Adsense earnings).

The lower the competition, the fewer the advertisers, the lower the CPC and potentially lower CTR due to non-competitive ad's?

This is a good point, but it's not quite so clear cut as that (is it? - genuine question).

For the benefit of those new to affiliate marketing and for those thinking of setting up Adsense sites, it's going to be well worth checking out the competition via a google search for the exact match term you have researched within GKW tool.

so Google search for:

keyword term
"keyword term"
allintitle:"keyword term"

Find out how many potential competitors are targetting that keyword term by looking at the total number of results returned, and checking out the top 10 results (at least), and decide how easy/viable/difficult it would be to out-rank any/all of the competition with a little SEO and link building.

For anyone interested who doesn't know, it's a column in the Google Keyword Tool that I had managed to turn off...

I suppose it depends on what you view as a low number exacts.

Personally, I'd still buy the domain if there's 1,000 searches a month for the search term. (as long as the competition is quite easy and ranking in the top 3 isn't too hard with a bit of work)

I recently got a domain that has a CPC of around £6 although it only gets around 800 searches each month. I'll find out soon whether it was worth it, hopefully it will be!

Personally I think it's all about the competition that's on the top of page 1 and how confident you are that you can beat them and therefore make a bit of money.
