Sorry, I've had to take the whois script offline for a while as I need to update the code because Nominet have just added extra fields in the whois, and my code needs to now reflect this.

Will the script be updated to use Whois2?, as this will allow you/us to query the server more.

Looks like this fits into the Whois2 category perfectly

The WHOIS2 won't allow YOU to do any more queries. It's merely for those wanting to operate a WHOIS proxy service without getting their own IP banned. You, as a customer with an IP address, using a WHOIS2 proxy operated by another party, are still subject to the WHOIS1 limits of 1000 queries per rolling 24 hours. That 1000 limit is the total number of queries made by an IP address using any combination of the WHOIS1 and one or more WHOIS2 proxies. So don't think you can do 1000 direct with Nominet via the WHOIS1, then another 1000 through one or more WHOIS2 proxies to increase the limit. You cannot. This is how I have read it and what I have understood. If I am wrong Jay Daley, please correct me. However I am pretty certain I am correct.

I am not a Nominet member (jesus, try saying that when you're pissed), so as far as I know I'm not allowed access to Whois2, and I believe Invincible is correct in his assumption.

you don't need to be nominet member.. if you provide a whois query service for your customers..... you can apply...

Thanks for clearing that up.

Apart from the 1 query per second limit applied to WHOIS then at the moment, what other limits are enforced now/in the future?

As I understand it from your post, Nominet will be enforcing a 1000 per 24 hour period from each IP?, but this limit can't be active yet as I have queried the WHOIS with 30,000 domains at 1/second quite a few times.

No other limits. It's 1000 on the WHOIS1 from 31st January 2006 and 10,000 on the WHOIS2 from the same date for those wishing to run a WHOIS proxy. However until then, add another zero to both values and those are the respective limits for each service.

FURTHER UPDATE (direct from Nominet in nom-tech)

"In response to customer feedback we are going to implement changes to our
WHOIS and WHOIS2 servers within the next hour. The changes are

- the query per second limit for clients accessing the WHOIS directly or
through a WHOIS2 gateway will be raised from 1 per second to 10 per second

- the query per second limit for WHOIS2 gateways will be raised from 20
per second to 100 per second

These new limits will remain in place pending a review of WHOIS, WHOIS2
and DAC usage patterns. Notice will be given if we are going to reduce
them."

Does that mean I can now remove the 1 second delay on my whois script which by the way is up and running now.
