I have come across a UK outfit that appears to have registered nearly 20,000 domains (mainly .com & .net) in order to benefit from the backlinks from when the name was previously owned.

That's a huge undertaking but I guess it only needs an average of a $5 profit on each site to be very worthwhile.

Is there much of that going on in .co.uk land?

And how do you spot a dropped/dropping domain that has some backlinks?

I use DRT, scan the names for backlinks and then manually check the quality of links using Yahoo site explorer – others may use different methods but that's how I do it. Backlinks aren't created equal, a domain with 20 decent backlinks from quality sites typically way better than one with 100 crappy links.

Alexa is also a good source to reference. Since they revamp the site they have thrown away a lot of links they use to show for me, but I think its about quality.

To spot a domain dropping you would need to do a lot of research,there are a few websites that show these statistics Eg: when the domain is expiring and getting dleeted ,page rank,backlinks etc .If i come across any of these websites i will post up on here,however most of these guys charge an extra fee to backorder a domain from them.

There are quite a few domains dropping daily with 20+, 50+ back links. A quick investigation with yahoo site explorer more often that not shows the majority to be the result of an automated script making postings on completely unrelated, outdated forums, hosted on angelfire.
