This forum really does nothing to promote the trading of domain names as a legitimate business.
Almost every sale seems to hyped and laughable.

And then there's the fiction that is 'Recent Sales'.

Can I just make a quick point that I think is important in the overall thread discussion (before it gets closed)

Having been in business since 1999 online, I have previously dabbled in domain buying and selling over the past 8 years - now actively buying and selling more seriously. Acorn has been a site I have been visiting on and off for about 4 years in order to keep an eye on values, sales and general market movement.

Unfortunately the latest changes, whilst seemingly a good idea, have left parts of the site confused and it is defintiely more difficult to find relevant information "at a glance". This is primarily on the domain sales side.

I realise there are more sellers now, therefore more sales, so IMHO this thread needs to carefully disected in order to improve the Acorn site and remove a lot of :

i. Completely inappropriate valuations - therefore pointless posts
ii. Repeated bumping of domains - if people don't bite after the first bump it's either crap or the wrong valuation
iii. Crap domains cluttering up all the decent stuff - pro / info / biz etc shoudl be kept very separate

No one really wants to see a completely moderated forum - they are a nightmare to manage as well as take part in, but something does need to be done.

Acorn has some great members and has always been a place for new and experienced 'domainers' (hate that phrase!!) to sell and buy domains, but if someone came along with a more targetted forum for sales, I think a lot of people would be tempted to use.

Just my 2p worth.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I think you miss the point that I am trying to make a more targetted sales area of the forum, plus I added the auctions mod to encourage auctions too, it just seems that members have different opinions on what they want to see and what is the best way.

iii - there is already a clear policy on this

The rules are posted but then if there are too many rules people feel "over-moderated".

I am weighing up all the feedback and will make some changes at the weekend.

Hi Admin

Wasn't critiscising - non so funny as folk and all that... maybe it's just a little tweaking that's need

I think the site does a great job I just wouldn't want to see it suffer from people that don't read the rules and therefore dump their 'great domains' in the wrong threads etc etc.

Cheers

So my thoughts are:

Premium Domains
Fixed Price (any price)
Offers Invited
Portfolios

For premium domains they have to be Admin / Mod approved and there is a £5 listing fee.

I would like to introduce a monthly sales event where we can have a list of domains that will be offered, with stats and guide prices and a quick fire, auction style time slot to go through the list.

By fixed price do you mean:

a) pileofpants.me.uk BIN £2500 offers welcome. Best offer 30p

or

b) finename.co.uk £50

If it's 'a' then how is that different from 'offers invited'?

Point taken, 'a' should be listed under 'offers invited'

Thats a good idea, a monthly sale of pre moderated quality names would be great.

And one thing that probably particularly annoys the MODs as well as us, is the plethora of non-uk sales still being posted in the UK-only forums!! Arrrgggh...

Perhaps new members should be required to have a minimum number of posts before they can post in the sales section??

Now that is a good idea. 20 posts would be my suggested minimum - that sort of level of committment seems fairly normal on many other forums.

Stephen.
