Quite closely divided again!

I think this is a bit different from 'rep' - which in many ways shows appreciation for a person, rather than a post.

The 'like' button was an easy way to acknowledge a single post.

My ideal would be a 'like' or 'approve' button - without a heart logo - and without any form of notification, certainly not a pm.

I have noticed that on a few other forum type websites that have a 'like' functionality, it is used primarily as a 'subscribe to this thread', which in fact can be quite helpful.

Say someone asks a question that hasn't been asked before on the forums, and you would also like to know the answer to this question.

As it currently stands, you would either need to post something like "I would like to know the answer to this too..." which adds nothing to the discussion and is helpful to no soul, but you get notified automatically of any responses, OR you could simply 'like' (subscribe to the thread), and you would be notified automatically when someone provides an answer/response to said question.

I guess it's (usually) just a simple, clean way of users subscribing to threads of interest.

ahh, nice. Never noticed that. Thanks.
The 'like' button is still a simple piece of functionality to provide a quick acknowledgment of appreciation for a helpful, quality or interesting post.

I assumed the 'like' feature gave you an indication of the best answer/reply in a thread, and allowed you to jump straight to it.

So if we had a 6 page thread on the cheapest / best deals on cadburys creme eggs .... I could jump to the best reply and rush out and buy some.

Or Walnut Whips.
