Just noticed the whois located at www.acorndomains.co.uk/whois.php takes me to home page? Just me or the service has been withdrawn?

What service? If you need to do a definitive 'whois', you must do it via other obvious auspices. You won't get a 'whois' by following a URL:

whois mydomain.co.uk

Either by Linux command line (above) or by the NIC's own whois, in this case nominet.org.uk for any .uk domain.
