Domain name Vs Company Name

How much do you think the availability of a domain name affects the branding of a product or company?

Obviously the ideal scenario is the marketing guys dream up a brand name and that domain is free to reg or acquire.

but how many time do you think the corporates have fallen foul of the following:

1) marketing dream up a brand
2) all the wheels get set in motion
3) some IT guy says "errr, you can't have that domain name or anything remotely similar coz they're all gone"
4) marketing have to compromise and the brand name or company name is dictated by the available domain

I'm sure i saw a real life example of this the other day, where this must have been the case, but i can't for the life of me recall it now.

Availability of the domain will increasingly determine branding with the onward march of the internet. Hurrah!

I think the smart marketing guys will be looking at domains at the birth of their idea and with the right money, they can take any extention and turn it into something completely different.

mortgages.tv
Slap it on the telly and in the papers enough and it sticks in your head. How many non web savvy out there know it is really the Polynesian microstate of Tuvalu with a population of only 9,000.

senate.mn
.mn is Mongolia! but extention now embraced by the US Senate in Minnesota

I sold Harley.st a couple of months back.
.st São Tomé Islands. (Don't ask me where as I don't have a clue!) But it now points to the largest private hospital in Harley Street.

I think we will be seeing lots of different extentions popping up in the TV and in the papers over the coming years.
