Quick Question...

I'm soon going to start a business.
To keep costs to a minimum and get above competitors...I'm thinking of ONLY accepting cheques for my goods.
I know this sounds stone age/drastic but I can pass on the savings I won't incur with a merchant account to my customers and quite easily undercut the competitors.

I know cheques slow sales down but they'll be getting the savings and once started....they can just order a week in advance in future!!

Acceptable plan?...or a non-starter?

Opinions appreciated, guys/gals!

If online payment is an option you could use Pay Pal as an easy way to accept payments by credit card. Sure they take their cut per transaction but then you dont have to go through the hastle of getting merchant agreements and processing the transactions yourself. You can set up pay pal buttons with present goods descriptions and amounts. You can also transfer funds from your Pay Pal account to your bank account for no cost.

If your business is online then I can't see many people writing out cheques. I haven't written one for years!

Hi Admin,
It will be on and offline.
I have thought of PayPal.
But don't they charge the buyer extra as well?
I bought a domain through Sedo and if I remember correctly...I had the pay 3.something% extra to PayPal.

Getting a merchant account would probably not be a problem (except with a high street bank as I'm just starting out.

I suppose having no online payment option is probably not realistic.

Know of any good merchant account providers (not high st. banks)?

Use nochex, they basically act as a payment gateway if you have a sellers account - people can pay you by credit card without being a nochex member and they dont force your customers to sign up with them (like w*nk paypal does). They dont charge the payer a fee but you will be charged a % on each transaction.

Check thier forum at http://greenroom.nochex.com/ a few grumbles in the "Complaints" section.

Also, none members can only pay you upto £100 per day, if they sign up with nochex then they are still limited to £300 per day. Depends what you are selling.

Once youve had a few sales you can up the daily limit for non members to £300 per day. Ive not had any problems at all I do use it with an oscommerce site though so the nochex integration was all done for me.

A good percentage of my goods are over £100.
I might just focus on offline and see how it goes!

gromy is on a distinguished road

An eNom reseller account can be funded via PayPal or Credit Card with a 3% fee of the amount sent subtracted; or using cheque or wire with no fee. I have delt with a couple other companies that do this as well.

I suggest giving the buyer as many payment options as possible. This way you would not force buyers to order a week in advance as you said earlier.
