Patenting and idea...

Ive had a really good idea of a little gadget that would be very useful in the house.

Ive never looked into Patents before and would appreciate any information on applying for one.

I guess the main thing would be, as its an electronic device and its just an idea at the moment. How deep into the workings of it would I need to go to get a patent?

Can I just explain exactly what the item would do, or do I have to list exactly how the items are made up and how they would function? Im not an electronics wizard you see so have no idea how it would be programed or made, but I do know 100 percent it is possible and would work.

How would I get a prototype made up without someone stealing my idea?

One of the companies renting office space where I work is a one man band outfit that deals with patents through to design and wotnot. I'll pm you his contact details.
