Arrow What's with some people!

I don't know if its me so I thought I'd post this thread but I seem to come across some weird domain owners out there....

My usual e-mail to owners is something along the lines of "I'm interested in your name xxx and wondering if you would consider selling it. If so, do you have a price in mind".

Then I get weird ass replies that help nobody, ranging from....
  • I am looking for £x,xxx but I will not reveal traffic or revenue stats
  • I do not have a price in mind but feel free to make an offer that you think
  • Offer what it is worth to you, say X pounds, such that if you heard I sold it to another buyer for more than X pounds you would think that buyer had paid too much.
  • The domain is not for sale but feel free to make an offer

Do these people know how to do business? Firstly, the domain is or is not for sale, and if it is, surely you have a price in mind you wouldn't go below?

Secondly, if you are willing to sell your name then why not be upfront with the facts and figures. You wouldn't buy a car without knowing how many miles it had done, if it passed its MOT etc.

Is it me or do you experience similar situations? Rant over.

If you want the name, make an offer, domain selling and buying aint about prices, it's about negotiation.

It's not that simple Khalid! As I read in a WIPO decision years ago "My shoes are not for sale but if you make good offer I happy to walk home barefoot".

Fair enough, but if they say "make an offer" and you do, you usually get "sorry no sale". Why not negotiate and say "that's a bit below my price bracket" or something similar.

Perhaps I'm coming across wrong buddy, don't want to get anyone's back up here. I'm just saying that I'm happy to negotiate and discuss but I find a number of people very difficult to deal with.

A simple offer/counter offer doesn't suffice with some people. Admittadly I'm still learning but I just can't figure out why there is a lack of discussion / flexibility with sellers.

Sellers with money don't care how little the amount of money you have, sellers without money will let you know sooner rather than later of a price they have in mind if they need the money, it's about knowing who you're dealing with, me I'll always tell you a price, whether it's £10000 or £10 if you negotiate we'll get there in the end. The big players don't care, they know they got money in the bank regardless of selling or keeping.

Someone once said here, they did a search on their home address to see how much money they had, another way is a company accounts search, but these days the house you live in doesn't mean much if you can't put food on the table, I live in a £22,500 car, it's comfy but cold at night.

It works both ways. You have contacted the owner in an attempt to buy the name. Surely you have a maximum price in mind that you won't go above? Why not offer it?
Ultimately it is simply down to negotiation tactics.

True, I never thought about this. I guess they are perhaps more experienced and like to guage you before revealing how much they are truly wanting for it.

I like your way of doing business Lee - tell the price up front! If you have any one word generics let me know (.co.uk only!)

Indeed tactics, but if I have £5,000 to spend and could get the name for £3,000, why let them know I have £5,000.

I like to be honest without revealing my maximum budget rather than say "I only have £3k" when £3,100" may clinch the deal because then you might lose out or look like a liar.

Most of my domains are for sale in another thread, any generics I get don't get sold through this forum as the users invariably dont have enough money. I got destinations for sale for the first time and some one word generics, I have held some back like chathosts.co.uk and laters.co.uk
