yes don't take the mods from a4u because they are complete muppets and you will probably alienate all the members,apparantly when you post a domain for sale every tom ,dick and harry can comment on the strength of the domain even though the person is trying to sell it,also when you mention the poor performance of one of the affiliates it is taken down quicker than a prostitutes knickers.

Yes would agree.

Its worth having a stated conflict of interest ie. mods cant pull / edit threads if they have interest in them etc

On one forum I run I have mods per section, which is helpful if they have a specific interest plus stops them running wild on the site as a whole.

Its worth mixing them up abit now and then as well

In any case, you should know which members contribute to your forum in a constructive and mature way even if you just look back through some of there recent posts. You could then form a list and whittle it down to people that actively help the forum even without being a mod, i.e. sending you spam post warnings, helping users look for the rules by linking etc...
