Just to add some more science to it. It appears that we're in the grip of an extreme of the 'Artic Oscillation'.

Cold Arctic Pressure Pattern Nearly Off Chart - Dot Earth Blog - NYTimes.com

The Arctic Oscillation and Arctic Weather Patterns

Not global warming. Just randomness. Explains the snowstorms in Eastern US, Europes cold spell, and severe snow/cold in China/Korea.

Thumbs up

What is it about this weather that brings out the stupid. Especially motorists who seem not to be able to adapt to a water (flooded engines in foot high water) and then skidding around like mad in the snow. Fair enough i don't have to drive around, so I won't but i'm amazed by how inept people are becoming.

Little snowy story for you...
So i popped into the local co-op yesterday. When i was going in i noticed a chap walking up the road in football boots. Clever he thinks, they will make mincemeat of the snowy conditions. Unfortunately after entering the co-op and traversing the welcome mat he hit his watery grave and slipped on the polished wet floor. Went flying under the bread counter and yelled like a little girl. I looked around to see loaves of bread falling on his head. Best thing i've seen in years. Note to self: don't go shopping in footy boots.

Interesting read - forecast for jan is good:

"This means that snow due on 5/6th in England will not be the
10inches* tops predicted by Met Office but more like 2 Feet."

Not seen anywhere in england with 24 inches, but plenty with 5-6 etc.

Frid 8th & weekend 9/10th are likely to suffer
even greater blizzards & snow deluges

Even 105 Crap FM local radio was saying 'its going to get worse over the weekend' and by the forcast given he thinks it will be 2-3 times as bad as predicted.

It would be worth paying the £96 for the forecasts surely as you can still place bets?

however as he says: In 4,000 Weather Test Bets over 12 years with William Hill, Weather Action forecasts made a profit of some 40% (£20,000). The Odds were statistically fair and set by the Met Office before being shortened by William Hill by a standard 20%; the results were then provided by the Met Office for William Hill to settle each bet. Piers Corbyn was excluded by the bookies from such account betting in 2000.

4000 bets returning £20k over 12 years?
Averaged that would mean each bet made a fiver, with 333 bets a year.

Each bet having to be set by the Met Office AND by William Hill, then have the Met Office provide the data to WillHill to settle it?

Who pays for the met office to provide such data in that volume? Ah.

Likewise you mention Al Gore has interests in carbon trading companies, but this bloke has a massive interest as well as he sells this data so there is zero incentive to point out when its wrong

I will keep an eye on the forecasts, and hope there isnt 20 inches of snow in the next 10 hrs!!

People have been complaining that grit is being 'stolen' from the grit boxes... which is odd in this weather

Contrary to what is often said, why does it come as a surprise that we get caught out by this type of weather? Snow isn't actually a common occurrence in the UK; we're hardly expected to be like Canada, with obligatory snow chains and a full set of spares in the boot!
Yes, it's a bit off to hear that your local authority is running out of salt, but other than that, this is nothing more than an odd weather glitch, Dickensian snow falls were never as common as those pretty Christmas cards make out anyway!
