For purely search traffic:
1 .co.uk / .com / .org.uk
4 .net / .org
6 not worth it

For branding and search (that is, you would like to build up repeat visitors & direct traffic)
1 .com / .co.uk
3 .net
4 not worth it

Depends on the market IMO...

For purely UK :

1. .co.uk
2. .com
3. .org.uk

For Global :

1. .com
2. .net
3. .org

(But to be honest - I probably wouldn't ever buy a .org unless a really REALLY good generic and I wouldn't jump at buying the .net unless there was no way I could get the .com.)

For branding as a UK company

1. .co.uk
2. .com

For SEO

1. .co.uk
1. .com
1. .org.uk

(Really makes very little difference in my experience what you use if you have the right keyword domain, content, IBL's and online strategy. But as traffic kicks in I would prefer .co.uk and .com over .org.uk purely due to recognition by dimmer members of the public at large)

Indeed. Just out of interest I just looked up around 10 big charities (RSPCA, Oxfam etc, the type with national ad campaigns) that use the .org.uk extension and checked to see if they own the .co.uk and redirect it to the .org.uk. Most of them is the answer.

Then I looked up roughly the same number of big .co.uk sites to see if they own the .org.uk and redirect them. One, the BBC and they don't redirect it.

Bag of the fag packet stuff I know.

Classified Rating: 100% (1)

.net is still the 4th most popular TLD in the world if I remember correctly...

1. .com
2. .cn
3. .de
4. .net

They SEO very nicely, same as most other TLD's and just as brandable as .com or .co.uk if you put the effort in.

I've spend a nice £x,xxx sum on buying up .net domains in the last 6 months!

It doesn't tell you as much as the initial impressions suggest. All the other extensions to the two terms in the domains for sale were only registered in 2007 and most not until 2009 and 2010 even the co uk's. So all is maybe not as first appears.
