Why Moonpig?

This is quite interesting, dont know if it has been posted before. Shows how the name being free to reg was one of the main factors in picking the name!

I only looked it up out of interest wondering why they use names such as Moonpig and Funky Pigeon!

I'd say it's a false economy. When you consider the amount of money they must have spent on TV ads and the like to associate "Moon pig" with greeting cards, they could have got something like greetingcards.co.uk or .com for much less.

And do you really think they would be as well known or grown to the size they are with just a generic domain name?

Generics have their place but surely can't be interchanged with advertising and marketing.

IMHO The same would have to be done if they owned greetingcards.com/co.uk (which I think would be very dull!)

They took a brand, ran with it, saved a high domain fee and now it's pretty much a household name. No brainer for me. All in the branding!

I agree.

Another (negative) thing that kicks-in with "implanting" can be familiarity (recognition) with a term without necessarily associating it with the service or product - hence word plays with know terms are much more effective for overall recall.

There is probably a good middle ground to be had that you can also therefore Trademark and take ownership of

I tried selling them BirthdayCards.co.uk, before I flipped it to another domainer. They had no interest.

Admit it though guys, not one of us can read Moonpig.com without singing it to ourselves as per their advert. They've done a good branding job if you asked me.

I'm living under a rock, had no idea who are/what moonpig do until reading this thread. Won't use them though, my gran loves to read the hand writing on the envelope, check the postmark and guess who it's from, it'll completely destroy the fun factor for her to find it printed ........

I've used them a few times - sending birthday cards around the UK while I'm abroad (I forget birthdays and they send me an alert a few days before, I login and select a card, maybe upload a pic of the fam, type a message and send it).

It's really cheap too!

Personally I wouldn't have chosen moonpig or greetingscards.co.uk but for me the value is in the idea, and the service and the ease of use/convenience.
