Dale Farm Eviction

Just now watching the 'Live at Dale Farm' coverage. Residents say that they're going to resist the bailiff evictions. What's your view of the whole situation?

Hilarious, that lady bringing Jesus into it. "Jesus was homeless wasn't he?"

I build on a green belt, they take my home from me and charge me for the damage, why is anyone else any different?

One rule for all, no matter who or what you are.

Planning rules should be enforced whoever breaks them.

It's not many miles from me and I know the guy that builds most of the homes. Most are genuinely good people but they took advantage of Basildon Councils original decision to grant planning permission for half of the site - they have tried every avenue to get retrospective planning permission for the illegal half. But it would be can of worms for Basildon Council to allow the 'travellers' to stay - It would set a precedence they they can't even start to contemplate.

Silly question, but why does a 'traveller' need to build a fixed home? There's sound bites and quotes suggesting they have nowhere to go. If this is so, doesn't this make them a resident and under the local planning law the same as any other resident?

I'm not against people having choice, but that choice has to be within the legal framework of the country you choose to live in.

Travellers used to have the right to travel and pitch where they chose, but the previous conservative government* stripped those rights away and forced them to settle, or to move between a limited number of fixed sites. This of course adds to the pressure on local communities who live near a permanent site, creating more antagonism, while removing the freedoms of travellers (or indeed any of us) to choose their own way to live and work.

* the same ones whose response to unemployment was to tell people to get 'on yer bike' to find work.. joined up thinking, clearly!

Perhaps that was because they would just pile onto any bit of land they liked - dogs and kids running and crapping all over the place; leaving all their rubbish behind - and the responsibility to clean up after them was down to the land owner.

The land owner has to get an court order to get them off his land which invariably took a week or more.
Not good if they're on your businesses car park - trade goes down dramatically - you have to leave car park gates unlocked all night to allow them access in case of emergency, and don't think they'll be looking after your premises in return...

The whole gypsy thing is just a loophole that they are exploiting - it's time the laws were brought into the C21st.

The council have offered them council housing which they've rejected on the grounds of 'it doesn't fit in with their ideals', and, get this...'we don't want to take the chance of a council house away from a young family'...aren't they big hearted!

When we were kids we looked forward to the week or 2 that we had a few gypsy kids to play with as their families were working down on the local farms at the other end of the village, I don't recall any hostility or fear.

These days you rarely hear the name gypsy, it is a shame that the view of travelling workers has been so tarnished by those who choose the lifestyle to exploit tax and planning regulations. I'm sure if these people chose to pay taxes & conform to planning the general public would be far more tolerant and there would be far less objection to the necessary "camp sites" being set up.

I'm guessing the genuine "travellers" are the ones who have been reported on the news as having already moved on leaving the usual anti-establishment protesters to fight it out on principle.

The idea of living and working anywhere seems a very attractive (if rather difficult) lifestyle, however, as with many "good things", the few seem to trash it for the rest

They got an injunction, delayed until Friday, what a joke this country is tbh.

People go on about the bankers ripping the hell out of the economy, that is sod all compared to the damage the lawyers do.

Lawyers should not get a penny if they lose a case, then they would stop bringing cases like this unless they really believed in them and that they had a chance of winning them.
