    Thanks Mally,

How many domains would you reccomend buying to start out with?

A couple of good ones, where you can see the potential to flip them at a profit pretty quickly. Double your money, and buy 4. Double again, and buy 8. And so on. I hear that's how several of the largest .com players did it (paraphrasing a bit) so it must be good...

    Zero.

No point wasting money on buying faddy / crap / hyped names, usually the first £100+ in reg fees for new domainers is a total waste, and in some cases £xx,xxx (thinking of one mobi muppet).

Your best bet is to think about what you want out of domaining, and how you want to reach that goal.

Then read through (dont post and bump old threads though!) old posts on here and other forums with your strategy in mind. Ask loads of questions but only after searching for the answers yourself :)

Then you ought to be set to make a few registrations / aquisitions and hopefully a path to profit.

    Cheers,
    rob.

domains also depend on if you want to buy to develop into a website and then sell or just buy, hold and then sell etc..

I'm more a person who buys to develop where as other members are holder's

I'd pick a couple of subjects that interest you or you do research on and stick to a couple of verticals for a start - don't go off in tangents as there are tooooooo many words, phrases and products in the world! So your right there.

This is a great place to buy from, you can post a wanted ad and state your budget.

as others have said, it depends on your initial focus.

You could be buying to flip; buying to develop for an affiliate based income; buying to develop in order to sell.

I generally follow route 2 so that my domains are earning me money on a monthly basis until such time that I decide to try and sell. What that means is that the GOOD names appreciate in value over the period and not so good domains will at least be paying their way, so will at least not result in a loss.

    Quick question

    Hi,

I've purchased my first domain. All seemed simple enough.

My order is currently at - domain name being requested,

Is this the normal practise and how long should it before it is complete?

    Thanks, Sean

Just to clarify my earlier remark, I meant "buy off OTHER people" i.e. go and pick up a couple of decent but potentially underpriced generics in the aftermarket, not "register new domain names". It's better to spend your money on quality rather than quantity...

I wouldn't buy any names before doing a fair bit of research first.

that's the idea mate, you are always best in buying domains that of interest to you,it's nice to see someone that doesn't jump in the deep end and buys a bucket load of domains because they sound nice.my advice is:

    never mix letters with numbers

keep it as short as you can

    generic words are best

what would someone type into google?

there is a big debate about hyphens in domain names, remember that google doesn't favour a hyphen over a non-hyphen but remember if you would like people to remember the domain a non hyphen is better.

i am sure someone will add to this list but they are my fundamental requirements...

When people link to a website, they often use the URL as both target AND anchor text, and I get the impression (I might be wrong) that domains with hyphens have an advantage there because when it comes to text, hyphens count as spaces and so in the anchor text you get the keywords as actual proper words, as opposed to one long word. So a domain like acorn-domains.com would get "acorn domains" and a domain like acorndomains.com would get "acorndomains" when the URL is used as anchor text.
    Is this true?

    Domain Auction sites

Hiya I am a newbie too, but I do know one thing:

Sedo is a waste of money and time. I paid for the evaluation which was bog standard and didn't tell me anything I didn't know (even as a newbie) and gave some random price recommendation.

I also paid for a feature that rotates apparently every 10 minutes but with constant checking didn't see it once over the month period.

I did generate more lookers, but nothing worth the money and potential commission they grab off you.

    Goodluck with you domaining....
