domain selling techniques

    Now i have decided to sell a majority of my names i am looking into the bet ways to achieve this. Things that spring to mind are

    1. direct mailing end users
    2. bulk emailing potential customers
    3. getting brokers for the better names
    4. adding to live and other high level auctions
    5. google adwords and other search advertising
    6. setting up a site and marketing it to sell own names

    Before i do the above, has anyone had any success with these methods or any feedback on them or has anyone got any better ways to sell that they can add.

    1. direct mailing end users

    I have previously mailed (post) people I have thought would be potentially interested in generic names. The key thing is to do the research beforehand on who you are contacting and what you are saying, if you do your homework right it works very very well.


    2. bulk emailing potential customers

    Nope, I would see that as spam and annoying. I do realise some do this and have sucess, but personal choice its not for me.

    3. getting brokers for the better names

    I have tried to outsource my own personal sales to individuals and other companies with no success. If a job is worth doing, its worth doing well yourself and all that :)

    4. adding to live and other high level auctions

    Mostly they are focused at resellers and its rare for end users to frequent them. Also depending on the auction venue the value they add is worth sod all, let alone the 10-20% fees and stupid lock in agreements.


    5. google adwords and other search advertising

    I have done adwords before with limited success, that was a bulk LLL specific sale.


    6. setting up a site and marketing it to sell own names

    Bigger commitment, and I would spend the time on 1-3-5 .

    It's a hard slog and can be very uneventful but don't give up hope. Mail everyone who comes under the radar. If you don't get a result, wait 12 months and do again.

    I had a name I regd in 1999 and thought it would sell fast. It didn't. I mailed everyone i could get in the radar evey year and I had no takers until last year. Sold it for £3K.

    So don't give up hope.

    Are there any services going that contact end users via postal mail on your behalf for a % if they find a buyer?

    Yes, this is something I am offering /doing - but very much decent names only as its a hell of an effort to get it done properly.

    Its far more work than popping a letter in the post :)

    I send letters all the time and get 50% success on replies, and about 20% on sales. I also target my prices by business as well. Like no point sending billy bobs landscape gardening business a domain like 'landscapes.co.uk' for 10k, when his gross profit is prob only 10k.

    I personally favour, A HP Laser print (the print is so crisp), using Verdana font, bullet points, underline, italics before bold. Checked by my friend who is a grammar nazi, printed on a nice weighted 100-120gsm laid/woven, off white paper (I don't like hi-white/brilliant white).

    Current Choice is Conqueror Laid Paper, along with Ryman Conqueror Laid Envelopes both vellum.

    If a letter feels authorative, then its treated as such :)

    If its a company where environmental issues are at the heart, you can you use something like

    Recycled Stationery and Recycled Paper from The Green Stationery Company UK - Mohawk Windpower Smooth Cream A4 118gsm £26.30

    And Include a little footer that says 'this letter written using X, Y, Z paper, blah blah, we take our responsibility blah'.

    Tailor your letter to the business :)

    I'm looking at sending a letter to finance companies , investment companies ( about 200 ) offering set 1 : Smallinvestment(s),co,uk and set 2 : Largeinvestment(s),co,uk
    at 5k per set or both for 9k

    Things i need are nice paper and nice envelopes, at these prices and dealing with professional companies i wouldn't dream of e-mailing them especially as a bulk e-mail campaign, doesn't give a good image.

    As for making your own selling site, for me it makes sense, i have made a mini site, not the best but it will do nicely, i have a home page, generic domains page, brandable domains page and personal domains page, an about page and a contact page and a F.A.Q page.

    I am now putting in the effort as i am out of work and struggling to find a job :(

    I think its important to target the person in charge of making related decisions, rather than sending out a letter to the office for someone to mark as advertising spam.

    Using nice paper etc might help but try to find out who would consider this and make the letter out to them.

    When contacting end users for generics how do you set your prices? The reseller prices might be relatively well defined, but do you just ask them to make an offer if they're interested?
