Call me old fashioned but I find it distasteful when I log in to Acorn and find offensive title's on the domain for sale threads, not so bad if they are inside the thread as you can choose to go in or not. I know my attitude is a bit dated but what do others think ?

what is 'offensive' ? this is very subjective and very much down to one's own interpretation. I know some members use ** to replace letters in a word that may be 'suspect' which I think a good plan.

Totally agree with you. Some may say the world has moved on but as a Christian I know God's standards are unchanged.

I agree with you. There have been some pretty offensive thread titles recently. My main problem with it is it makes me think twice about recommending Acorn to others, because sometimes when I hit the new posts list there can be a number of fairly strong obscenities.

Whilst I respect free speech I think some of the more offensive titles definitely bring the overall tone of the forum down.

I agree with you. There may be youngsters looking at this forum. I'm no prude but Fish's solution is elegant and effective.

The problem for me is that the Thread Titles will appear when you hit New Posts. If there was a way of removing threads from the Adult Forum from the New Posts function that would be good. If I was in an office I would think twice about using the New Posts functionality given some of the thread titles that have been listed recently.

It is possible to stop certain forums (e.g adult cateories) from appear in the search, i.e new posts.

Only problem is, the category is then not searchable if you used the normal vbulletin search, but searching via google.co.uk would still work

I don't think the adult section headers should be displayed on the main forum at all. I know we are able to hide that section but only after having viewed the offensive titles. That is the same for all new visitors. I think Admin would benefit from a cleaner acorn forum - i.e. I'm sure advertisers would be more willing to pay for banner ads on the front page. In the past our company has thought about approaching admin for some prices on banner ads but the regular offensive titles and threads were the thing that stopped us.

Sticky situation to try and balance the wishes of some against others.

If admin stops adult section threads from appearing in "new posts" then thats a poor user experience for other members who dont object.

If admin bans totally the adult section and adult domains from being placed in thread titles then thats a poor user experience for other members who dont object.

Of course its a good user experience for those who do not want to see such activity.

I know I have been guilty of posting domains up for sale or discussion that others might classify as offensive. I'm sorry for any offense caused. Genuinely.

However personally and rather obviously I dont find these offensive. I trade domains in many sectors and simply think from a business perspective regardless of any moral or ethical objections others may have that I do not share. Its a selfish point of view I know, but you cant please everyone.

Newsagents have a top shelf for a reason but you cant stop people from looking or seeing them up on the shelf. Its their choice whether to continue looking, pick up or look away.

Why not add some functionality to the forum to replace all commonly offensive words with asterisks in the title only. This way it will not be possible for someone to offend deliberately, accidentally, or otherwise, and the whole system will be automated. Adult posts would therefore automatically follow the same procedure, so although the posts might be viewed by all when clicking on New Posts, the offensive component will be covered over.

A message at the top of the post could read:

[word] in title replaced with ****

...incase someone posted a domain for sale and only stated what it was in the title, which would have then become obfuscated.

It would solve the problem for those who are offended, and for those who are not offended and want to see the replaced text, they just hover over the title or visit the post in the usual way.

Personally, I find the things distasteful, but I know from conversations with a couple of members who run such sites that they don't like it much, either.

They are torn by conflict. They have a regular income from their sites. While they personally dislike the content, they have put time and effort in and they are getting a return. If they give up on that market, someone else will step in and take that income, and they will be faced with having to learn another market from scratch.

I wouldn't like that side of the business to fall into the hands of the unscrupulous, I would rather see these transactions operated within a responsible framework, and Acorn is, informally, part of that.

And even though I know that Jesus is my saviour, I don't see what being a christian has to do with it - there's plenty of bonking in the bible.

Is this just in the adult section we are talking?
I thought you had to choose to join that part? If not maybe that needs implementing?

Adult material makes up a large proportion of the internet, so there is certainly a market for all kinds of related domain names.

I'm no prude and no real christian, so I'm not going to condemn these domain names, especially when I've just made a few quid from a very very tame name in there!

What this thread makes quite obvious is that people either love them, or hate them. If people want them, then they'll go looking for them, so I'd suggest burying them a little more, or creating AcornAdults??

I know I had Acorn open on my screen one day, as my boss walked by. It was just at the Adult section of the homepage. A difficult one to explain!

Sorry Crabfoot but I can't agree that were offensive domains excluded from this forum that somehow the trade would be taken over by the unscrupulous or that it would be a bad thing for acorn. It's a pretty unscrupulous business anyway. And being a Christian should make a difference to the way we act in society and try to shape society. We should never compromise our beliefs just because society is dropping its values fast. The Bible is clear that standards will plummet before the coming of Christ but it is also clear that we should make a stand however much we are ridiculed.

The Bible is quite clear that God hates immoral or offensive behaviour and those guilty of it will be rejected by Christ. Ephesians 5:3-5 explains it very clearly:

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person - such a man is an idolater - has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

That's propaganda, Nigel. God is Love, and He loves us all. He didn't write that ...

Who cares? Grow a thicker skin, MTFU and stop worrying about it. We have enough rules and regulations as it is.

Won't somebody *please* think of the children?

I've done my best on this over the years. If you expect me to read every thread title and check it for conformity I'd better hire some staff as it's impossible for me to check all this, even with the 2 mods I have now.

I put most of my time into keeping spammers out of here which goes unseen by you all ( as that's the whole point). The more popular the forum gets, the worse the spam attempts and volumes get.

I have manually edited some of the adult thread titles but I can't say I do it often.

Is it possible to hide certain forums from the homepage in VB? I haven't seen that option.

I also spend a lot of time moving threads into the right forum (such as this one - should be in forum feedback not general).

I am also testing VB 4 with the database and plugins with a view to upgrading as soon as I can find the time to test it all:

Maybe VB4 has more options, I will add it to the test list.

In the admincp , goto the recent adult forum, and set the search to no, that will stop new threads/replies appearing on the "new posts" searches

Not sure how to stop the home page though

OK there is a forum Group called "Adult Forum" that is optional to join:
    http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/profile.php?do=editusergroups

Can someone who IS a member of this group tell me what they see on the homepage and in searches?

And someone who IS NOT a member of this group, tell me the same.

    Many thanks

    Admin
