    Hi!

I'd really be grateful for your *realistic* views on the sale value of:

    Poetry.co.uk

As I explained on my intro post, I want to sell to finance my nursing degree, but at the same time I don't want to be ripped off.

What realistic price do you think I should aim for?

What do you think would be a wise 'cut-off' price below which I'd be silly to sell (in which case, I hold on to the domain and work every weekend and spare evening to make ends meet!). I just don't want to be ripped off.

    Thank you!

    Susannah

I'm going to plump for about £5,000 though It wouldn't surpise me to see that exceeded by several thousand or even doubled to the right publisher

Wow great name. It's hard to say really but if I owned it I wouldn't let it go for less than £15k

It's a good name and you won't necessarily get folks here giving you a realistic valuation because we like to buy domains!

The best thing to do is look at domainprices.co.uk for similar sales and perhaps spend a bit of time reading past posts on the forums to increase your valuation skills.

My instincts say 10k but my head says 3k because monetising wouldn't be easy, you would need a load of traffic and regular members who spend a decent amount of time on the site so you could then sell advertising space.

It doesn't look like an easy one to make money from ?

    Good luck 8)

Good advice as always - trouble is even after 11-12 years myself it's not easy to predict anything without putting it up for sale.

The plus points are all the obvious ones - English - Scottish etc poetry is a rich seam to be involved in but, i'm not so sure about a monetry value within that niche. It's definately going to end up in a publishers hands eventually, I just wonder how much competitiveness within that market there is.

Thanks very much for all your honest opinions, and I'm interested in anyone else's.

I guess I'm hoping prospective buyers / companies see the application beyond simply verse - to the use of the generic word to sum up a product as something beautiful, well-designed, and delightful... as in the intuitive idea of 'poetry in motion' or saying something is sheer poetry, when they're not talking about words and rhymes at all.

At the same time, I need realistic appraisals and not what I wish I could conjure up.

I'm really interested in this, because it could make a big difference to me!

Just ran a search on my mailbox, and looks like I tried to buy this domain from a guy called Richard in 2008...

If you don't mind me asking, did you end up buying it from him?

Could be a brilliant site... running competitions etc... but trying to make money is always the trick!

£10k to the right person, I'd have thought.

Often there's no reason nor rhyme
    why some of the time
does a domain sell for a very high price
though usually it's because the name is nice

it's poetry dot co dot uk
and very easy to remember and say
so to you acorners, move out of the way
make room for the big boys to come into play

    or something like that :)

I see this name as a community site ... I'm sure internet users would like a site where they can share their poetry. I can see a web developer buying this one rather than a big company.

Sales techniques are writing to big companies, or if you feel brave, publicise well on the internet beforehand and then put it on domainlore, where the web developers can go after it.

Great name Susannah, I agree, to an end user we're talking 10-15K+. :)

PS: Good luck in your studies, been there, done that training. :D

A prime generic like this must be worth 5 figures to a publishing company, I would have thought.

    Hi again Susannah,

I agree with the general thoughts posted so far. I think it would be a great shame to let this go for less than £5k.

Although £10k is the most realistic area to aim for, £15k has been mentioned already and that wouldn't be a surprise. It could go even higher - how the buyer is going to monetise the domain as mentioned by doodlebug is only a major consideration for site developers. For a poetry publisher or poetry festival, monetising this domain is not of great importance. It's a fantastic domain and the figure they may spend will depend on how much they want to have the premium uk generic for their sector - just perfect for their promo materials.

Something not mentioned yet (at least when I started writing ;)) is that you currently have it just parked with nothing AT ALL there.

Why don't you put Google adsense for domains up or, better, a very simple site with adsense and a few affiliate links.

Although you are not going to make £5k quickly, I think you could be surprised with adsense revenue on a site like this. You'd also get a good indication of traffic to the domain.
Poetry.com is, admittedly, a fully developed site - it currently has an Alexa of 93,434 - that's some serious traffic. Haven't time to find the best comparison but RoyalAlbertHall.com has a ranking of 106,375.

Clearly people are keen on poetry and with a domain like poetry.co.uk, it won't take much for people to start finding you on page 1 of google.

G says 450,000 local searches with an estimated £0.38 CPC.

My feeling is that if you put a basic optimised site up there as soon as possible, you'd at least get a sense of its earning potential and see whether a trickle or torrent of ad and click revenue comes in from affiliate links / adsense etc.

Then you can look at the numbers and decide whether you will keep the domain. The revenue may be able to save you from at least some of your weekend jobs.

If the traffic numbers are no good after six months, you can always opt to sell it then. But I think there's every possibility you can, over time, achieve a modest side income which may assist you month after month, year in year out.

Best wishes and good luck, Richard

Its a nice domain and as people said should get quite a bit from an end user if you can find the right one. If you need the money soon, why not put it up for auction with a reserve price. If you can hold on, develop it and get it ranked well in google and the value of the domain should increase quite a bit.

In this instance you need to take those thoughts right-out of your head. That kind of thinking /application works with words that are open to interppretation/application (they have an inbuilt versatility) Or a £xxx, xxx advertising budget spend.

I won't over-argue the case but sometimes a readers instinctiveness can be over-ruled but not in this instance

Oh wow! you have all been amazing!

I haven't even considered making it earn money until it sells. I guess I don't know much of that side of things, and you mean to say I've been sitting on this domain and it could have been bringing me in some money each month?

I'm so slow at this sort of stuff. I own 50 domains and some other good names like this. Do you think I could seriously raise £100 or £200 a month with these domains? Going o/t a bit - so maybe I'll stick to the appraisal thing.

I'll be honest - if I could get £6 or 7000 it would make such a difference to my workload at uni. To someone like me, this is big money because that's maybe 150 shifts of weekend work at the hospital (on top of all my studies and placements).

Thank you all for your advice, and I'm building up an impression of what I should accept or not accept, and what to do meanwhile, if it doesn't sell at once.

What other domains do you own, if I may ask, Susannah? :)
