When I first heard about her missing after leaving a club at 3am I thought fake taxi although this one looks real at the moment.

Sad that there's been no person presumed missing regarding the 2nd body, maybe only killed and dumped today or a long while ago ?

Let's hope he was a serial killer stopped early on just like the crossbow cannibal.

I think taxis all looking the same would definitely help, maybe you can only buy one brand new or 2nd hand through a specialist dealership and not just from local ads etc and you must prove you have a taxi licence to buy one.

I used to live up the road from that Asda. Have to say I'm really surprised and shocked that that happened, Swindon always struck me as being really safe.

Private hire cars are not the same as taxis. Private hire cars are not licensed to pick up people unless pre-booked by telephone or at an office/via a licensed attendant. Many private hire firms will provide the person making the booking with a description of the car that will attend (e.g. make, model, colour, registration). Proper taxis display a plate outside the car as well as information inside the car. Only those vehicles are licensed to pick people up without a booking.

One cannot stop someone putting a sticker on the side of their car claiming to be a private hire driver. That is why the rules were introduced with regards some kind of prebooking. However one cannot stop members of the public deciding to get into a private hire car without prebooking, although they wouldn't be insured if an accident occured so I have been told.

Making all private hire firms own the same vehicle isn't going to happen because the fact that owner drivers can use their own vehicles is what allows these companies to undercut the more expensive "hackney" style taxis, which have plates.

I'm pretty careful about the kind of vehicle I get into late at night. It's either a private hire taxi from a company I use regularly, or occasionally it is a fully licensed taxi that I pick up at the side of the road.

    Yes, murder is terrible.

I tell the wife to take a photo of the taxi before getting in and txt it to me. Make sure the driver can see you take the picture. She never does. Maybe she pretends to - probably have the same effect.

How was she planning to get around employment discrimination laws? There is no legit argument you can make as to why you need female drivers and men are not suitable...

Isn't there currently a loophole to allow for this, same as the insurance loophole for female only insurance policies? The latter recently had a nail in the coffin in Europe, so maybe the taxi situation could be changed too!

"The Court banned the practice from December 21, 2012. The date was chosen as it is the fifth anniversdary of the introduction of European Union: Directive 2004/ 113/EC1, which prohibits all discrimination based on sex in the accessto and supply of goods and services."

There is a massive difference . The insurance companies can prove that males are a higher risk and wanted to quote as such. That taxi thing is nothing more than someone saying they dont want to employ males, with no valid reason as to why.

Although it seems to be perfectly acceptable to discriminate against people... as long as they're white, christian, male and straight. Good luck trying to open a shop with gays banned from working there, or a "no muslims" taxi service :p

I bought the website of a now closed down company who touted themselves as "the uk's best Gay only travel agency". I wonder how long I'd have lasted if I set up a "No Queers Travel Agency"...

But on that basis, it could also be argued that the ratio of convcted male / female rapist or murderers would also show males as a much higher offender rate than a female - I would even go as far to say that the difference is even larger than the risk comparison of male / female drivers.

How often do you hear of a female committing either act ?

Well if you were taking out an insurance policy against ever being convicted of rape/murder, I would expect men to be quoted higher too...

The chance of being killed/raped by a taxi driver who came to pick you up from a pre arranged booking (and wasn't an illegal taxi) is so close to non existent its not even relevant...

Ha, makes you wonder if today's catcher of gay.org.uk will actually be able to use it without straying on the wrong side of one law or another?

He just happened to be a taxi driver. I don't think he was running his meter when he was out shooting up Cumbria.

This world we're in just isn't fair is it. I fear that the white, christian, straight male, shall forever be the underdog. Black, atheist, lesbian women get all the breaks, and drift through life with their riches and privilege.

Back to the main subject at hand, I think the media tends to blow these issues into something larger the life. The chance of getting murderered or raped by a taxi driver is so remote that it doesn't warrant any changes taking place. As long as we manage to arrest the lunatics commiting these crimes, we're doing what needs to be done.
