As the title says. I presume most people started aff marketing just by dabbling in their spare time. But how long did it take to get to the point where you made some nice money a month (£xxx-£xxxx) - I'm aware some affiliate marketers would be looking at those figures a day lol. I would be looking at them a year as it stands :(

I still know very little about all this internet business really. But I try and learn something new everyday and just keep plugging away at it. It would be nice to start seeing the fruits of my labour though!

I launched my first affiliate sites of my own creation this week and last week and have made £4.80 so far. I was hoping to be in double figures at least

£4.80 isn't bad for a start. If that took you 2 weeks that's £2.40/week. Assuming that A) this is just in your spare time and B) the stuff you've built will keep going at the same rate, then by sticking with it for a year you will be making £125/week in passive income by then. In 4 years that would be £500/week...

Actually, long before then you should be seeing better results as you find out what works and what doesn't so as long as you keep going your numbers should improve faster...

Ye just in my spare time Edwin, I wouldn't consider doing it full time until I could double the salary I'm on now, which granted isn't much.

I like your maths, it's all about accumulation I suppose. I would certainly be happy with £500 a week. I've got a good basic site template now to apply to a few domains, I'm taking the approach that it's better to be a big fish in a small pond than a tiny fish in the ocean.

For your first affiliate site that is very good :)

Try to make a simple target such as "try to increase the commission by £5 a week", by adding more content, link building, marketing & cro. It will build up to some nice sum if you stick with it, trust me ;)

I started in Dec 2005 as a newbie without a clue, after a year of researching, creating naff sites, and finding a vertical I was happy with I started generating proper income by July 2007, and became a fulltime affiliate in July 2008.

Thanks, it's the sticking with it I find hard lol, I don't have any patience at all. At the moment I would be happy with 1 sale a week of a couple of quid or more..

Andrew - 2.5 years to be a full time affiliate is very impressive. I'm still in my first year of anything web related and I've picked up a fair bit in that time, I guess perseverance really is key.

Can you suggest any research materials that were particularly useful to you? I found that any info I can find on aff marketing only goes to a certain point (depth wise), really something like a full case study would be very useful

It's not necessarily perseverance, it's more learning what it's worth building a site for. Opening a Google AdWords account is pretty useful, as then you can look at PPC spend on terms and get a grasp of where the ad revenue is.

accelerator, I was looking into Adwords the other day but put off by the £5 signing up fee. I know £5 is nothing in the scheme of things but I've spent a lot of odd £5 and £20 here and there and they build up quickly! So probably next month I'll look at Adwords..

I did however run a couple of campaigns on Facebook so that I could see what this PPC lark is all about. Only 4 day campaigns at a time with a £5 daily budget. I modified the advert each night with different picture or title and managed to improve my CTR every day (although the many variables such as the day made it a pretty flawed trial) but I didn't get any sales.

What would you typically set as a daily budget for a PPC campaign? (I know it would depend on the offer you were promoting etc but ball park figure?)

That's not bad getting some aff revenue after a week. I've known some people taking months to get their first affiliate sale.
Be careful with adwords and other PPC ads, it's VERY easy to spend more than you earn.

I was not suggesting using AdWords PPC as a technique, I was saying that once you have an AdWords ac you can use the Traffic Estimator Tool to see ad spend (by others!) on a given term, to get a rough guide to the opportunity available for an affiliate site.

    I started in April 2008.

Just a hobby really, but this year so far I've generated £370 per month average.

I think this is worth a link: http://www.stevietee.co.uk/affiliate-marketing/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-not-so-super-affiliate/

Certainly something that I was guilty of when I started. I'd hate to count how much time and money have been spent on regging a domain, hosting, installing wordpress, choosing a pretty template, trying to come up with more than 200 words only to decide that it wasn't the niche for me before moving on, saying to myself "I'll come back to that site later".

Heh, in theory I'd like to have a life like that...but it would probably drive me mad after a few days.

pbyrd - £370 a month is respectable, quite a nice chunk of the average mortgage. How many sites do you use to earn you that?

It really takes as long as you have to learn what to do, execute and ramp up. Where I fail is the ramping, I simply don't have the time and mental capacity to take my earnings from healthy 4 figures a month to 5. I really enjoy my job and see no reason to try and risk my family on the whim of Google and the other players.

As a seasoned web liar myself, I read that as "I make 20 quid a month with adsense and it is too hard to ramp it up to £40 a month, so I'll settle for 20 and pretend to everyone else I'm doing great" :)

Call me a liar if I'm wrong :p
