    Ok Guys,

I've been doing in this for about 18 months now and despite one £8000 sale on my very first sale which gave me an extremely false impression of what could be achieved I have had very little success due mainly to buying crap domains.

I have the read the board and got all the tips going but still made the all the silly mistakes that all newbies seem to do: ie.

Getting excited at google keyword figures that turn out wrong.
Being seduced by cheap non popular extensions
Thinking that a single word domain is great even if you cant do anything with it…etc..etc
    .

So with the bulk of my domains due to be renewed in about 6 months time i have decided that the following will not be renewed and i may even cancel them to get them off my account as they are starting to annoy me.

However i would appreciate any 'Experts' pointing out if any should be saved from the chop. Also if anyone wants to take any of them off my hands - PM me with an insulting offer.

I hope this could turn into a useful thread for any newbies reading it and avoid the mistakes many of us seem to make.

    Cheers

Nothing standing out amongst those (although a couple of .org.uk you could develop and sell on) but hopefully will be a useful post for newbies

Out of curiosity what name did you sell on for £8k - great first purchase and first sale!

Did you pick this up free-to-erg or did you have to buy from another owner and flip?

I think you're making a smart move cutting your losses by dropping them. There are no "keepers" on that particular list.

Everybody makes the same mistake in the early years and some compound it by renewing the names and if they let them drop some other newbie catches them and spends money just because they've been registered before.
I remember reading in the late nineties that domaining was a little bit like the gold rush people selling the shovels and picks made more money than most of the prospectors.

This is useful for newbies although I will probably still end up buying rubbish even though I have been warned ;)

Well done on boiler scrappage it's just a shame those opportunities are few and far between, I had a similar rush of blood recently when I bought "personal independence payment" it will replace disability living allowance in 2013-14, I came on here for an appraisal and was pretty much told that it was rubbish. Just need a rich person to see the potential in it :( and I am set for life!

I am quite keen on disability domains and had my eye on your swivel bath seats but the more experienced than I said there were no keepers so I bottled out of showing my hand for fear of a "stupidity label":-(

Anyway enough of my ramblings your post has been useful to me as it has focussed my mind, thank you.

    Regards

    Aiden

Its all very confusing Aiden The well respected edwin who is regarded as as guru in these parts has a the name antistaticmat.co.uk up for sale on his web site for £2000 - it is a product that has a similar amount of searches as swivel bath seat and the items appear to sell for a similar amount of money. But I doubt i could sell www.swivelbathseat.co.uk for a fiver.

Either I am missing something about the world of anti static mats or its time for a rethink!!!

Don't try and sell Swivel Bath Seat put a wordpress install up, some amazon, ebay and other store links, a bit of information etc and see if you can see some sales on there.

If you can make a few sales a month you'll make money and be able to sell it on a revenue basis.

("anti-static mat"/"antistatic mat"/"anti static mat") together get nearly 2x the searches of "swivel bath seat". The average CPC bids are also higher, and it's a product that's much more readily shippable as it's small, light and very easy to package. There are also 5,220 Google shopping results for anti static mat, vs just 400-odd for swivel bath seat.

Beyond that, we own the plural as well and I would expect the pair to sell as a set if it ever does.

Of course, you also have to consider that our business model allows for much greater leeway because we have over 6,000 generic descriptive domains all delivering leads to our central domain sales site, so we can be sure that one or other name will sell with gratifying regularity (though of course it's impossible to predict WHICH name will sell next) and that allows for more experimentation and a lot more "margin for error" on any particular domain.

I agree don't sell it but if you do I will have it for a fiver;)

Ironically kiddie seats didn't spring too mind, disability seats did so maybe you might want to take it in that direction.

    All the best

The only one that catches my uneducated eye is bongos. I'd certainly put up a wordpress site with some amazon links on that.

From a developer point of view many of the domains in your list could be used for affiliate / Adsense. Therefore I always avoid calling any name worthless unless it is presented as "highly brandable".

I have domains apprised here or elsewhere at "reg fee" and some of them made me 10-50 times the reg fee in just under a year. Before even thinking to drop a name I will always try to squeeze everything out of it. If you think that you made a mistake, try to make a profit out of it. You have at least 2 years to try. ;)

Oi you - leave my "Brandables" out of this - they're sad enough when one leaves the pack to join a new venture capital start-up, without you putting the boot-in.

"Now now brandables he didn't mean it really"

I didn't want to upset you, sir! :D Simply if you check the market, when domain has nothing else in it, it is usually advertised as "highly brandable" or Web 2.

Well, I do know the costs involved in brand management. Not an easy exercise.

P.S. I am talking about Your domains just hypothetical domains ;)
