There's a domain that expires in the next week or so that I've had my eye on for a month or so now. Just wondering what's the best way to get it? I assume it's drop catching but is there any service that I can use thats not expensive?

Don't really have a lot of money to spend on it but I'm sure it would be worth a bit if I did grab it!

Is it a stupid idea to try hand reg it, yes? I suppose it takes a few days before it drops or something as well does it?

    Hi Jamie,

Once the domain has expired, it goes into a suspended stage for 90 days, until it drops and can be caught/reregistered again. During this suspended stage the owner can renew the domain.

Had a feeling that would be the case.

So basically I'm better off waiting another 3 months or so?

    Thanks

If its a decent domain get it booked in now. Most of them will only allow one person to book any one domain, if you leave it too late someone else may book it before you.

it's best to book everywhere, most of the places only charge you if they catch it for you, so you have nothing to lose in doing so. Just an FYI some places will only let you book it there once it is in the suspended stage.

If its a good domain chances are there will be other people out there trying to catch it too. I once had a domain booked at 7 places, and still didnt get it!

Best of luck with it though.

Why not try contact the original owner ask them to renew and give them an incentive if you think it's worth it. It's risky but could pay off. Has done a few times for me.

If you go down the drop catching route get it booked everywhere like iamrofe (Mark) has said above plus see if you can get some private catchers to help.

    Goodluck

Once the domain expires it goes into a "Renewal required" state for 30 days then it gets suspended.

As Mark has said above, the owner can renew the domain right up until it drops.

Most if not all catchers offer a no catch no fee operation so I would try and book it with as many as possible. Most catchers will not let you book a domain until it has been suspended and some will not let you book it until X days before it is due to drop.

Thanks for all the help everyone :)

So basically the current owner has around 4 months to keep it after the renewal date then?

Thanks. It says May when I do that. Also says that the domain is suspended, but it's not due for renewal until next week or something.

Looks like it's been suspended early then. Loads of reasons why this happens - it could mean the domain drops early or not at all

    Update:

Is it just me or are a lot of drop catching sites quite bad :S

Some don't even give you any sort of a price without spending 15 minutes looking for it. I've only requested it to be caught on one site so far and it's not even listed on my account as me requesting the catch.

To be honest matey if its a valuable domain you probably got no chance because one of the private catchers will more than likely get it.

Still haven't sorted this out yet! It's at "Renewal Required" at the moment.

I'll have to try dropcatch it, I think it'd be worth a good amount of money if I get it.

    It's now at:

    Renewal request being processed.

So I assume I won't get the chance to dropcatch this one.
