Anyone know if there is a resource for uk databases or lists.

To give an example - A site that has a list of say UK Restaurants or schools. Do people goto the effort of compiling these lists themselves? or is there an easier way?

    would be interesting to know...

i know some people who took the time to do it themselves, but you can buy lists of data (e.g go to yell or whoever and say you want to create a mailing list to every uk restuarant, and they will prob sell you a list, thompson also offer this i think).

For schools I would try OFSTED - the schools inspector, if it doesnt go through them its liable to be illegal anyway hehehehehe so probably a good jumping off point for schools info.

Sci7 regularly produces such lists derived from various sources.

These can be used directly for marketing, or for SEO purposes.

    Examples of recent requests:
    • Name, URL, phone / fax / email for all suppliers of X, where X is a major company.
    • List of all towns and cities in the UK
    • List of companies in Europe, USA, and Japan working in the field of X.

Often we work from multiple sources and our key challenge is to present all the data in a consistant fashion. We have experience of many of the major commercial business data brokers and can advise when their services are of value - we can help integrate data derived from such sources into lists we produce

We have experience of preparing data for mailing houses (separating records by country and consistantly formatting town names and Zip codes), and in producing lists for use on the web (breaking large lists into browsable "trees", dealing with unusual character sets appropriately and presenting the output in HTML or XML.

Use of large browseable customised lists, combined with our URL rewriting expertise is one of a number of very powerful Search Optimisation tools we offer our clients. For one client last week we added more than 100 000 highly relevant, unique, automatically generated pages to their site.

We take great care to ensure that all we do is legal and ethical.
