I am putting up an early draft of some of my response to V2.

    This is FAR FROM FINISHED.

Please don't tweet/blog/disseminate the document as it's A) not finished and B) needs a rewrite - I've put it up strictly in case it helps anyone else. Thanks!

I will post an update to this thread when I have a new version to look at - I have about 20 pages of notes to distill into it!

    Here's the document:

Wow - spot on summary page. I genuinely didn't think you held those views - forgive me if you have in other documents - it is easy to get lost in threads and consultation stuff.

Of course I don't want to refer to it until you feel it is ready and thanks for sharing draft thoughts, but you do give permission to distribute on page 1, and this is publically accessible right now.

My views haven't changed (if anything I'm more against .uk now than I was then). You can read them in the V1 document I prepared back in November last year, which was widely disseminated and which I have not touched since.

(Related aside: that's why I find the aspersions that some have cast in my direction so hurtful)

BTW, I've now added an appendix about security risks :)

Me too! I have hundreds of documents that I painfully want people to read before drawing their own negative conclusions about what I am or am not up to. It's just not possible, and I am left howling at the moon.

Anyway, sorry for not keeping up with the homework, this is good stuff.

Note: I am publishing this now even though it's not ready because I wanted to get some eyes on it in advance of the meet-up tomorrow evening.

Hi Edwin, forgive me if you have stated otherwise since as i haven't had time to follow some of the threads on here as much lately. However, i am sure you said that you were far happier with the way V2 proposals had panned out?

I know i was quite quick to make snappy and sarcastic comments about you when V2 was announced, and for that i am actually sorry as i hadn't thought that bashed out in a second comment through very much.

Have i misunderstood this, but your opinion has now reverted back to being very much anti .uk as opposed to being more accepting of it?

I just lose track of stands for what anymore!

V2 was so much better than V1 that I felt a brief (and hopefully understandable) moment of elation at the "death" of the nonsense that was V1. Like having an elephant on your shoulders replaced by a large sack of potatoes. You feel a lifting of the burden that's so great, you don't instantly think about the sack that's still there!

After taking a deep breath and a step back, I reverted to the notion that I've held (documented in writing) since the beginning of V1, that is that we'd all be better off without .uk at all.

The more that Nominet has dragged its heels and refused to provide information or justification for its actions, the more that view has strengthened.

Make no mistake, V2 is better than V1. But it's still bad. The previous two statements aren't incompatible.

BTW, added some replies to the draft, up to the middle of Q3 of the consultation :)

That's completely understandable Edwin, and good to see you didn't beat around the bush in your response.

Thanks for putting this out there Edwin reads great so far. I think because you were so vocally anti .uk during the first consultation the more measured response this time round has left some confused.
I know I had to read over your initial responses to v2 more than once as at times it came across that your were happy with the new proposal. When in reality I think you were just saying this proposal is better than the last.
For those who were still in any doubt I think your current document firmly states your stance.

    Correct.

If we HAVE to have direct.uk then V2 is much better than V1.

But the status quo is much better than V2.

    'defense' should be 'defence'.

Not keen on the way the goldmine part is worded - the stats speak for themselves and are analysed well, but the wording of the analogy comes across as a little on the petty side. For similar reasons I'm not massively keen on the 'Stop the madness!' parts - bit too cheesy.

Rest of it is very strong.

    Thanks. I'll think about that.

Meanwhile the draft is "finished" in the sense that all the sections are in and all the questions have an answer. I probably won't tinker with it again until after the meet-up.

I will try and have this polished and live by the end of this week, or at worst over the weekend. I will post a separate thread to the finished document when it's ready, and I will also be deleting the draft version from my site.

    Very Professional

Well structured and thought out and as always very professional and complete.

Well done, is a massive understatement.

The pivotal feedback on V2 .uk consultation.

Ok, it's even more work-in-progressy than it was, but there are an additional 5 pages in the document. More to come in the next few hours.
